Description
Children from lower-income families are less likely to achieve academically than their better-off peers.

Action Tutoring is a charity that works to level the playing field by empowering pupils to make meaningful academic progress, and opening doors to future opportunities.

We are looking for volunteers to support pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in maths or English


As a volunteer, you'll:

  • Work with 13 pupils to improve their English and maths, either inperson or online
  • Commit to a 1020 week programme for one hour at the same time each week
  • Support either primary and/or secondary schoolaged pupils
  • Use our tutor workbooks to shape your weekly sessions
If you enjoy working with young people and are passionate about educational equality, you can make a tangible difference by volunteering for just an hour a week


What support will I get?

  • Training (a twohour induction session)
  • Insession support from your Programme Coordinator
  • Lesson plans with additional online resources
  • Travel expenses up to £5 per session
  • A free DBS check

Where can I volunteer?
Face-to-face opportunities are available in Birmingham, Bristol, Merseyside, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, London and Sussex. You can tutor online from anywhere in England, Scotland and Wales.


Please note we cannot currently accept volunteers who live outside the UK or are under 18. Our programmes run during term time, and you can sign up at any time throughout the year.

What skills do I need?

We look for volunteers who:
We understand that not everyone interested in volunteering with us will have completed A-Levels or attended university.

If your qualifications do not match these requirements, we still encourage you to apply We would love to hear about any other relevant qualifications, training or work experience.

Action Tutoring volunteers come from a range of different backgrounds and occupations and are aged from 18 to 80 As a volunteer, you can be part of a like-minded community and have a direct impact on the outcomes of the next generation.

We also can provide you with a reference at the end of your first programme.
