    The role will report to a Commercial Manager located off site and manage a Senior QS/Commercial staff on site 3 or 4 days a week.

    Key Responsibilities


    As the Managing Quantity Surveyor, you will oversee the commercial management of civil engineering projects from initial planning through to final completion. Key responsibilities include:

    1. Team Leadership & Development: Manage and mentor a team of quantity surveyors, ensuring high performance and continued professional development. Provide strategic direction and ensure that your team is equipped with the necessary resources and support to perform effectively.
    2. Commercial Oversight: Take full responsibility for the financial and commercial management of multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring each project is delivered on time and within budget while maintaining profitability.
    3. Cost Control & Forecasting: Prepare and review detailed cost estimates, budgets, and cash flow forecasts for projects. Proactively monitor and control project costs, ensuring they remain within approved budgets and identifying any potential issues early on.
    4. Contract Management & Negotiation: Lead contract administration activities, including the negotiation and management of contracts (such as NEC, JCT, or bespoke), ensuring compliance with agreed terms and resolving any disputes that arise.
    5. Procurement & Subcontractor Management: Oversee the procurement process, ensuring that suppliers and subcontractors are selected efficiently and in line with company policies.
    6. Risk Management: Identify and assess potential risks associated with projects, developing and implementing strategies to mitigate these risks.
    7. Reporting & Communication: Prepare regular financial reports and cost analyses for senior management and stakeholders, ensuring that all parties are kept informed of project progress, budget performance, and key milestones.
    8. Value Engineering: Champion value engineering initiatives across projects, identifying opportunities to reduce costs while preserving quality and meeting client requirements.
    9. Client Relationship Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.

    Requirements


    To excel in this role, you will need:

    • Experience: Significant experience as a Managing Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor within the civil engineering sector, with a strong track record in managing large-scale infrastructure projects.
    • Education: A degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Membership in RICS or similar professional body is highly desirable.
    • Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of construction contracts (e.g., NEC, JCT) and a thorough understanding of civil engineering project management.
    • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership abilities, with experience managing and developing a team of quantity surveyors.
    • Commercial Acumen: A deep understanding of financial management, cost control, and procurement within the civil engineering industry.
    • Software Proficiency: Competence with industry-standard software, such as COINS, or similar project management and cost estimation tools.
    • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex commercial and contractual issues.
