About the Role

Base Location:

Flexible UK & Ireland | We're proud to offer a Flexible First approach to work, and this role is no exception.

We will, however need your base 'home' location to be one of our SSE offices or depots around the UK and Ireland.


Salary:
£61,100 - £91,700 + cash /car allowance + 15% performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Reporting to the Commercial Director, this role's core objective is to manage a commercial team to provide consistent and rigorous management of our commercial processes and contracts.

You will be expected to ensure that maximum value, efficiency and compliance is obtained in both prospective and current energy assets.

The Head of Commercial will play a leadership role in delivering the Distributed Energy Business Plan and will be responsible for supporting the Distributed Energy Management team with general commercial support as well as being a focal point for contract support, analysis, financial modelling, budgeting, forecasting and reporting.


This individual will be accountable for establishing and managing contracts and commercial arrangements as well as own the development and management of the annual budget (circa £30m turnover) and financial performance for the Asset business unit.

The Asset portfolio is presently made up of 18 heat networks, but is growing to also include Solar and Battery assets, and Electrical Vehicle hubs.

This role will work closely with the senior leads in both Assets and Operations, and also with other functional teams including Legal, Procurement, Strategy, Finance, PMO, Engineering and Assurance.


To support the ambitious growth plans in DE, you will also work with stakeholders to develop opportunities, provide the commercial rigour and support, manage commercial risks and opportunities, and ultimately play a key role in helping DE to win work whilst ensuring appropriate contractual terms and financial returns are secured.


What do I need?

  • Ideally, you'll be qualified in a relevant field e.g. Economics, Procurement, Law, Finance, Quantity Surveying, etc. but appropriate experience in the management of energy assets is equally as important.
  • You will be expected to review and understand models that are required as part of the financials for existing and future energy schemes, supporting the team with the management of the short term (monthly Profit & Loss, reforecasts) and long term (5 Year Plan, post investment reviews) financials across the asset business.
  • You will also be expected to support the team in the formulation and negotiation and ongoing management of internal and external contracts, so experience working with client/customer facing documents is required.
  • Experience of developing and managing Joint Ventures, Partnerships, Joint Developments, and more traditional NEC3/4 Services and Product Agreements would be advantageous.
  • Critical to the success of this role is a solutionbased mindset aligned with strong commercial acumen, decision making based on risk assessment, and the ability to lead in complex environments.
