The Head of Legacy and In Memory Giving leads the longer-term strategy and annual operational planning, the continual adaptation and development of the programme to respond to emerging trends and opportunities, a high performing team to ensure excellent team engagement, and has oversight of marketing activities and the administration of gifts.

The role requires excellent people management, strategic and critical thinking skills, the ability to lead cutting edge innovative campaigns, influencing and stakeholder management skills, and both income and expenditure budget management.


The Legacy and In Memory team is part of the Marketing, Data and Insight department who inspire long term support and maximise opportunity, engagement and income by putting the supporter at the heart of everything they do.


Main duties and responsibilities of the role:

Development of longer-term strategy and annual planning

  • Development of legacy and in memory giving strategies, ensuring strategies are routinely reviewed and adapted.
  • Commissioning and monitoring insight at a macro, sector, and audience level to inform plans and decision making.
  • Influencing and aligning key stakeholders to strategies and plans to gain buyin and drive accountability for delivering across the charity.
  • Development of annual operational plans and budgets.

Oversight of the delivery of annual plans

  • Compilation of detailed income and expenditure forecasts and reports by programme, presenting to key stakeholders as required.
  • Cross team working on supporter engagement and development to ensure legacy and in memory giving are considered and prioritised.
  • Delivery of all planned activity and marketing, ensuring appropriate approvals and reporting on impact.
  • Integration of marketing activity across the charity to drive maximum value.

Lead legacy case management

  • Ensure the legacy case management function is delivering to the highest standard and following best practice, ensuring the charity receives what it is entitled to whilst providing exceptional supporter care.
  • Ensure the Legacy Committee and Senior Leadership Team are aware of any potential reputational impact from contentious and/ or problematic cases as well as any changes in legislation, precedents or case law and any changes from key sector stakeholders which could impact the income the charity receives from legacies.
  • Ensure that the Delegated Authority and Terms of Reference are followed and implemented as appropriate.
  • Work with the Data Team and Finance Team to ensure legacy income and forecasting is managed internally in line with all appropriate legislation including the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice.

Lead a high performing and highly engaged team

  • Management and development of the Legacy and In Memory team including goal setting, performance management, personal development planning, resource management and ensuring ARUK's leadership attributes are displayed.
  • Relationship management across a variety of partners, agencies and suppliers, from contract to routine performance reviews.

Play an active role in the Marketing, Data and Insight leadership team and beyond

  • Drive collaboration across the Marketing, Data and Insight leadership team to achieve shared goals and support in cross team targets.
  • Play an active role across the charity and in Heads of department forums to ensure legacy and in memory giving is a shared goal and priority, identify opportunities and influence future plans.

What we are looking for:


  • Experience of leading both a legacy fundraising and legacy case management function.
  • Knowledge of legacy marketing and administration best practice and legislation.
  • Experience of leading and developing a high performing team.
  • Income and expenditure budget setting and reforecasting.
  • Ability to understand and interpret complex data sets.
  • Ability to influence across an organisation at all levels.
