Description

We are looking to appoint a professional, experienced Assistant Stage Manager (Book Cover) for the Royal Shakespeare Company's forthcoming 2023 Stratford season.

The position is offered as a fixed term contract, based in Stratford-Upon-Avon.


As an
Assistant Stage Manager, you will work with the Company Manager and Stage Manager to realise the ambitions of the director and creative team with responsibility for all props (including puppets, weapons, armoury and rehearsal costumes)and furniture during rehearsals and throughout the run, liaising directly with the Props Supervisor, Designer and the RSC's Props and technical departments.

You will also provide reliable and accurate emergency book cover as and when required.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the Company Manager and Stage Management team to ensure the smooth running of rehearsals, technical rehearsals, onstage understudy rehearsals and performances, ensuring that all daily requirements and needs are met
  • Working collaboratively with the creative team, RSC producers and technical departments to facilitate and realise the production's artistic ambitions throughout the rehearsal process and performances by ensuring the efficient flow of information for thesmooth running of the show
  • The compilation, distribution and communication of all show related paperwork including (but not limited to) all rehearsal generated notes, production meeting minutes, prop lists (including fire / smoking plots, weapons lists, letters lists etc), risk assessments,show plots and cue sheets
  • To deputise for the DSM when required in rehearsals and during performance as Emergency Book Cover
  • To coordinate (and participate in) the prop, costume and furniture requirements requested for production related Touch Tours collaborating with the RSC's Audience Care & Access teams and RSC technical departments.
  • To support other RSC productions (including R&D workshops, events, pre and post shows talks, insight sessions and access performances) as required by providing Stage Management cover when requested by the Head of Company & Stage Management
To be suitable for this role, it is essential that you have the following skills and experience:

  • Significant professional ASM Book Cover experience, working on professional large scale theatrical productions
  • Experience of cueing shows either as a DSM or Book Cover
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Time Management and Scheduling
  • Understanding of H&S policies and production of Risk Assessments
  • The ability to work well under pressure
This is a full time, fixed term role.

There will be a prep week prior to the start of each productions rehearsal which will take place in Stratford-Upon-Avon, rehearsals will take place in London.
