A Mechanical Fitter works from detailed drawings or specifications, piecing together mechanical parts using hand and machine tools and precision measuring instruments.

You may also be setting and adjusting machine and cutting tools to actually produce the parts and then testing the performance and condition of installed mechanical equipment.


Engaged to maintain / improve plant safety and efficiency, Carry out preventive maintenance / testing of company /client mechanical equipment and control systems.

Fault finding and repair malfunctions of mechanical equipment and control systems. Implement small-scale modifications as directed and authorised. All tasks to be under taken safely, efficiently and in accordance with the site's safe system of work.


An extensive knowledge of site process and company compliance, familiar with compressors and associated fabric maintenance equipment, diesel engines, turbines, pumps, vessels valves, filters.


As well as mechanical aptitude you will need a sound knowledge and understanding of current techniques and equipment used within mechanical maintenance.

An


interest in changing technology would also be beneficial, as would problem solving skills and an ability to follow routine procedures.


  • Establish technical requirements to achieve objectives.
  • Shape materials and components using hand and machine tools.
  • Mount and set holding devices and cutting tools.
  • Mark out surfaces and check that that they comply with the specifications.
  • Set and adjust operating parameters to produce components within the specified dimensional accuracy.
  • Manipulate the machine tool controls safely and correctly, in line with operational procedures.
  • Produce components to the required quality.
  • Assemble components in their correct positions, securing components using the specified connectors and devices.
  • Prepare the work area, materials and equipment.
  • Set up and carry out tests within agreed timescales.
  • Follow strict health and safety policy and procedures.
  • Read and understand technical drawings Precision lining and levelling of plant and machinery.
  • Replace valves, overhaul flange, and butt welded joints.
  • Supervise and give guidance to Mechanical Fitting Trainees.
  • Mark the shape and dimensions of a part to be machined by studying blueprints and using measuring instruments.
  • Assemble and fit machined parts using drill holes and tap threads for bolting parts together.
  • Check tightness of joints and operation of moving parts.
  • File or chisel parts to make final adjustments if the fit is not perfect.
  • Clean and lubricate assembled articles.
Shrink-fit parts using oxy-acetylene torches and presses, dry ice and carbon dioxide freezing.
