Job summary:


Forestry England is seeking a motivated individual to join our Forestry Land Management team on a 2.5 year fixed term appointment (with the possibility of permanency) working across a multi-purpose forest environment.

North England Forest District has a complement of 132 staff responsible for 61,000 hectares of forest and 25,000 hectares of open land.

Annual timber production is 550,000 m3 and there is a planting programme in excess of 3 million trees a year.


The District has 45 SSSIs totalling over 10,000 ha and is a major contributor to local and national biodiversity through projects such as red squirrels, ospreys and red kites, species reintroduction, forest re-wilding, limestone woodland and blanket bog restoration.

The District has five visitor centres at Gisburn, Grizedale, Whinlatter, Kielder and Hamsterley. The public forest estate in North England District attracts over one million visits per annum.


Job description:


Purpose of the Job


To work as part of the District's Wildlife Ranger team and Grizedale beat team based on the Grizedale West Beat, in North England Forest District, to deliver forest protection and habitat conservation objectives.


Key Work Areas:


  • Control and management of deer and other mammals to protect forest crop, regeneration, and biodiversity in line with district management plans.
  • Participate in and manage beat and wider district conservation projects and schemes, such as Red squirrels, Butterflies, Red kites & Dormice.
  • To build and maintain relationships with FC and external contacts, where this benefits collaborative wildlife management and the functioning of the district.
  • To undertake regular liaison with forest district staff and assist with beat planning, monitoring and delivery.
  • Undertake ecological and pre forest operation site surveys and advise district colleagues of protected species.
  • Liaise and work closely with sporting rights holders and tenants.
  • Advise and support Forest District staff in restock design, appropriate protection methods (including deer fencing) and tree species choice to aid reduction of deer damage.
  • Support district colleagues to engage woodland users and promote positive behaviour for the protection of forest habitat and infrastructure.

Person specification:


Essential

  • DMQ Deer Stalkers Certificates Levels 1 and
  • A current Police firearms certificate
  • Experience of using effective communication skills to convey messages to a variety of audiences
  • Able to source and train a suitable dog to assist in deer management. The dog will be required to pass a skills test consisting of basic field obedience and have the ability to track wounded deer.

Desirable

  • A good understanding of woodland management and woodland ecology
  • A qualification in wildlife or conservation land management such as a BTEC National Diploma, or significant experience in a wildlife or conservation land management role
  • Experience in wildlife conservation
  • European Protected Species Handling Licences
  • Building management
