The overall role of the Transport Planner is to schedule and track job requests whilst liaising with the sales team and reporting to the Transport Manager in the daily running of the Transport Office's services.


Post Overview


The Planner analyses and generates the routes for the WSH fleet of vehicles, on the road using their knowledge and resources at their disposal.

In doing so, they manage drivers' daily schedules to maximise productivity and ensure costs are controlled, answer any queries from drivers and respond to issues arising or breakdowns in a timely manner.


We are looking for an individual who is flexible with their approach to work, has a great eye for detail but is able to see the bigger picture of a problem in front of them, and is a good team player.

Experience is not necessary as full training is provided for those showing the right skills for the position and a desire to learn on the job.


This is a busy role requiring a multi-tasking approach to managing the workload, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and effective organisational and planning skills.


The post-holder will be an integral part of the Transport Office team so must have proven ability to work within a team.

Previous experience within a recycling, tipper and or plant transport role would be an advantage, but not essential.


Key Responsibilities

Transport Planning:


  • Maintaining a solution focused, flexible approach to make sure we do all we can to deliver on requests made of the fleet.
  • Receiving planned job schedules and reactive job requests, both from the Account Management team and direct from the Customer, dependent on contract arrangements in place.
  • Organising and planning drivers and loads, ensuring loads are delivered accurately and on time, whilst maintaining a high quality customer service and in the most costeffective way.
  • Ensuring that the scheduling of work is accurate and up to date on Job road runner management system, planning driver schedules to optimise working hours for greater efficiency.
  • Maintaining phone and mail contact with the drivers throughout the shift as a means of ensuring smooth flow of operations.
  • Ensuring all required transport data & management information is prepared, maintained and updated in accordance with required format and time deadlines

Culture & compliance:


  • Supporting our 'safety first' culture throughout activities completed and communications with the team.
  • Consciously upholding excellent customer service levels at all times, ensuring all interactions with the customer are conducted in a professional manner.
  • Reporting to the Planning Manager the absence from work of allocated drivers and staff.
  • Tracking that drivers and vehicles are compliant with legislation, including the monitoring of driver's hours and breaks.
  • Responding to requests placed of the fleet by Compliance personnel to ensure the smooth running of the operation and adherence to Service/MOT schedules.

Due to the nature of the operation, the post-holder will be expected to work some unsociable hours, which would include weekends and bank holidays.

  • An uptodate knowledge of relevant legislation.
  • A sound geographical knowledge and experience of routing vehicles is essential.
