Description
HTD Centenary Fellowship - for either 6 months full time or 12 months at 50% time

As part of the commemoration activities of the centenary of the Hospital for Tropical Diseases a clinical Fellowship scheme has been established.

Subject to renewal of sponsorship, these competitive fellowships are to be awarded annually, commencing in 2021, funded by the Charitable Fund of the HTD.

These Centenary Fellowships are designed to facilitate Fellows to carry out projects that will extend the reach and impact of HTD beyond the walls of the hospital to enhance the effectiveness of HTD activity.

Examples of the sorts of activity might include research projects in target populations (specific migrant groups, travellers visiting friends and relatives, immunocompromised) channelled either through communities and community groups or through collaborations in primary care.

Posts advertised here will commence in Aug/September 2023 or Feb/March available). Applications accepted until deadline of 2nd June 2023 with provisional interview date of 13th/14th June 2023.

In their Personal Statement applicants should, in < 500 words, describe the plan for the Fellowship project, briefly articulating aims and objectives, specific research question, target population, proposed methodology and any funding already available.

Sufficient information should be included, including named supervisor(s), to enable reviewers to assess feasibility.

Although supervision and guidance is important for success in this role, applicants should expect to be working fairly independently for much of the time and should be comfortable organising their own schedule and leading their project.

Project activities will differ widely between Fellows and may involve work largely based in the community or in a primary care setting, with patients, members of the general public and/or clinical colleagues as well as on-site at UCLH for office-based work.

Many projects will entail meeting many new people and require strong inter-personal skills.

The infectious diseases department at UCLH encompasses a highly dynamic and friendly and welcoming team with a breadth of specialist interests in both clinical and academic aspects of infectious diseases and tropical medicine.

There are close links with infection related pathology specialties and frequent opportunities for both timetabled and ad hoc learning.

Periodic meetings bringing together current and former HTD Centenary Fellows will be used to share best-practice and troubleshoot challenges encountered.

Each fellowship provides salary funding to support an early career doctor to undertake a period of research or service development directly relevant to the work of HTD.

The intention is that this will be primarily activity outside of the hospital setting, either in the community or in primary care.

These Fellowships are to support development of new services or research, so this should be at the centre of the project.

Proposals for public engagement, health education or intervention implementation would fall within scope only if evaluation was a prominent component; projects where aspects of care in the hospital environment (inpatient, outpatient, emergency department) are the primary focus of the project would not be suitable.

Successful applicants will be expected to
- develop and deliver their proposed project in close collaboration with their supervisor/supervisory team
- prepare relevant submissions for institutional authorisations and ethics committee review
- attend and contribute to ad hoc HTD Centenary Fellow meetings
- provide a brief interim and final report for the HTD Charitable Fund

This is not a training post.
