Job summary:

  • Ofqual is the independent qualifications regulator for England. We currently regulate 200+ awarding organisations, and approx. 11,600 certified qualifications. These include GCSEs, AS and A levels, and a broad range of vocational and technical qualifications. Regulating on behalf of students of all ages and apprentices is central to how we fulfil our statutory objectives.
  • Ofqual is a rewarding, dynamic place to work. We offer employees the opportunity to develop within their role and progress through the organisation via a number of Learning and Development opportunities and activities.

Job description:

The Regulatory Compliance Team is Ofqual's professional evidence and intelligence gathering function.

We deliver a range of targeted compliance activities to:

  • Investigate when things go wrong
  • Check to see how awarding organisations meet our rules
  • Provide strong evidence to make sure Ofqual can hold awarding organisations to account
  • Help Ofqual to focus its regulatory activity
  • Support Ofqual to achieve its goals
We gather evidence and intelligence professionally, using expert disciplines to ensure high quality evaluation and reporting. You can expect to use principles of good investigation and audit, which are key skills to being effective in the role

The role has a broad range of duties, and you'll need to be comfortable switching from one thing to another.

We work across the organisation, and you can expect to work directly with colleagues working in our awarding organisation performance teams, policy, research, communications, our legal team and, at times, some of the most senior people in Ofqual.

So, you'll need to be a great communicator, as well as skilled at gathering and evaluating evidence.

Typically, a week in Regulatory Compliance can include:

  • Working with colleagues in different teams to agree the scope of the projects we'll deliver
  • Working with your teammates and the team's management to design and develop those projects so that they're successful
  • Obtaining information, evidence and data from awarding organisations to inform your evaluation of their compliance
  • Meeting with or interviewing staff from awarding organisations, including their senior staff
  • Evaluating multiple sources of evidence to form an assurance or compliance opinion, and reporting on that
  • Presenting your findings to decision makers
  • Working in multidisciplinary teams to support Ofqual in deciding how to respond to compliance risks you've identified
As ambassadors for the team and for Ofqual, we pride ourselves on our high levels of professionalism and integrity.

You'll have to maintain that professionalism in sometimes challenging situations, and you might have to deliver difficult messages to awarding organisations.

You'll be supported to do this, but you'll need to be clear and confident in your communications.

We're a fairly small and very friendly team, where each team member is valued for their unique contribution and fully supported to succeed in the role.

We believe strongly in developing our team members and have a programme of structured learning and CPD, along with a tailored induction designed to get you started quickly in the role.

In Ofqual, we work in a hybrid way. So, you'll spend some of your working time in the office, and some of it working from home. We'll make sure you have everything you need to work effectively, wherever you are.

While we can do a lot of our work from the office or remotely, this role is likely to involve a lot of travel across England and might need you stay overnight away from home sometimes.
