A fantastic opportunity has arisen within the criminal justice liaison service for a skilled practitioner.


The post holder will need to be an independent practitioner providing Specialist Forensic Mental Health Care, within a define geographical area within Gwent, which ensures the early identification of people with mental health problems who are detained in police custody or who are awaiting a court appearance.


the practitioner will be expected to provide specialist psychiatric advice and assessment within the Criminal Justice System; identifying and quantifying the needs of mentally disordered offenders; act as an 'expert witness' to the courts and provide guidance to magistrates regarding treatment options or recommendations for custody sentencing.

Where the individual is known to services, they will provide appropriate information and liaison. Often assessments will need to be made within tight timescales and under difficult conditions.


A key component of the process will be the independent assessment of risk in the context of options available to Magistrates.


The post holder will ensure that their service delivery is of a high professional standard that is in line with Health Board policies and procedures.


To develop and maintain professional links with other agencies and work in collaboration with users, carers, statutory and voluntary agencies.


To continue to maintain effective working relationships and referral procedures with magistrate's clerks, hospital services, police, social services, probation service and prison services.


To continue monitoring an accurate system of record keeping of those with mental health problems within the Criminal Justice System.


To regularly undertake clinical supervision with a named supervisor in order to maintain and improve standards of care, developing a high level of therapeutic use of self to support the therapeutic goals of social recovery.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
