This position sits within our Carbon Neutrality team, who are responsible for the development and implementation of a projects and technology roadmap that will deliver on Anglo American's GHG emission reduction commitments and ultimately take the organisation to carbon neutrality.

The Carbon Neutrality team is developing a wide range of projects to eliminate and abate the bulk of Anglo American's GHG emissions.

Power generation represents one of the largest GHG emission sources, and the Carbon Neutrality team is investigating and developing projects where electrical energy storage is used to firm variable renewable power generation such as wind and solar.

Such projects include Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and other more novel and potentially promising storage technologies.

Within the Energy Systems & Storage Projects team the intention is to develop a fully renewable Southern African electrical energy supply for Anglo American mine, processing and smelting assets, including making these more resilient to the occurrence of loadshedding on the South African grid.

Job Description:

We are seeking a
Principal Project Manager (Energy Systems) to use a robust scientific, engineering and project management approach to deliver PHS and Storage projects within the Anglo American Group.

You will be tasked with coordinating the delivery of PHS & Storage opportunities with partners, AA plc business units and the wider Anglo American group team.

Other responsibilities will include:

Provide technical, safety and project leadership in the planning and execution of commercial scale PHS and Storage projects within the group.
Strategy development in the selection of PHS and Storage opportunities and their integration into the wider group value chain and the delivery of cobenefits to the AA group.
Tactical planning of commercial, engineering and project delivery of PHS and Storage projects
Lead engagement with certification bodies as applicable
Coordinate project delivery
Driving PHS and Storage projects from concept to pilot to fullscale deployment.

Qualifications:

BSc Engineering
Desirable: A postgraduate qualification (Masters / Doctoral degree or equivalent) in a relevant technical discipline
A demonstrated thought leader with relevant PHS or Storage experience.
Experience in the design, development and execution of firstofakind technology projects
Experience in the planning and management of large industrial or civil engineering projects.
A reasonable understanding of the extractive industries.
Demonstrated knowledge / experience with integrated project planning and delivery
A demonstrated track record of following and successfully implementing the leading science in past projects (early adopter)
Skilled in technoeconomic assessment
