Purpose of Job

To provide testing services and quality control checks on products and raw materials from production, supplier and customer sites and support product and process development projects in accordance with internal methods as directed by the Technical Director.

Mechanical Engineering Technology Degree Apprenticeship;

We are a family owned business manufacturing a large range of bespoke specialist concrete products for high temperatures applications, based in Scunthorpe. Due to an increase in demand for our products, we are seeking a new team member for the technical laboratory department. You will need to be committed, enthusiastic, flexible, adaptable to any tasks required, and with skills and knowledge in the sciences. You must have the desire and ability to learn and improve on a personal and organisational level. You will be part of a dynamic team, ensuring adherence to stringent quality production controls and records, creating bespoke products for a wide range of international clients. You will receive training and on the job support from a highly qualified & published scientist, respected in her field, and provided with the opportunity to learn, and do, all aspects of manufacturing refractory products. You will be on a three and a half year degree programme with Sheffield Hallam University, a Mechanical Engineering Technology Degree, with time from work release to attend the university. This on and off the job, work and learning path will eventually enable you to participate in the design of new bespoke refractory products and improvements to the production of existing products. House of Work: Monday to Friday 8 am to 4 pm, 40 hour week

Salary: Living Wage, £24,570 per annum

Holidays: 20 days per annum

This is a work role in a Refractories Laboratory and Plant, it will provide a very wide range of learning opportunities; it will be hands on, hard work, but rewarding. Our teams are committed to providing the best products on the market, we work hard, and we love what we do.

• Testing

a). Prepare samples and perform the required tests on products and raw materials, as directed by the Technical Director Ensure the appropriate tests are undertaken in accordance with the appropriate test method, as set out in the corresponding safe system of work, within the required timescales as set by the Technical Director.

b). Collation of data and recording of test results. Accurately capture and record the test results, using both paper and electronic formats.

c). Storage and disposal of test samples.Once testing is complete ensure samples are stored or disposed of in the appropriate locations to maintain a clean and orderly working environment.

Practical, methodical and meticulous approach. Ability to work independently in an organised manner, and plan and manage own workload.

Understanding and basic proficiency in Office 365, including SharePoint, Outlook, Word and Excel.

Disciplined and committed to maintaining housekeeping standards.

• Plant and Site Assistance

a). Internal trial support.Where applicable, assist with new product, process and/or material trials to support implementation and capture key information to assess feasibility and quantify impact.

b). External Supervision.When required, supervise external trials and installation, capturing relevant information to ensure quality standards are maintained and that key outcomes can be determined.

Good attention to detail and ability to work well in a team.

• Administration

a). Maintain and adhere to filing system.Transfer test results and information to the appropriate locations on the server/SharePoint in a timely manner to ensure data can be easily located and accessed when required by the Technical Director or other interested parties.

b). Other. When required, ensure any results and written documentation are accurate, concise and forwarded to the relevant stakeholders and stored in the correct location in the server/SharePoint.

Understanding and basic proficiency in Office 365, including SharePoint, Outlook Word and Excel. Good organisational skills.

High standard of written and verbal communication, with good command of English language, including spelling and grammar.

• Miscellaneous

a). General housekeeping, maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities. All equipment and facilities must be kept clean and properly maintained at all times. General repairs (i.e. replacement of elements, furnace floor, mould maintenance, etc.) must be undertaken in accordance with safety procedures in a timely manner. Where external repair is required, this should be reported in writing to the relevant person.

b). Stock control. It is critical that an adequate supply of key items are maintained within the laboratory, as such when stocks are becoming depleted this should be reported in writing to the relevant person so that stock can be replenished before it is exhausted.

c). Health and Safety. Health and safety regulations and requirements must be observed at all times. This includes fire, personal safety, security and local notifications. Appropriate training should be undertaken as required within the requested timescales. All near misses, accidents and incidents must be reported in line with company policy.

Good level of practical skills and basic knowledge of working principles of equipment. Ability to monitor usage and understand principles of stock control and lead-times.

Ability to understand and follow instructions and safe systems of work.

Qualifications; Mandatory

GCSE grade C of 4 or above (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics, Science (Chemistry and/or Physics). And one of the following:-

112 UCAS points including at least 64 points from two A levels or equivalent BTEC. National qualifications to include mathematics or a mathematics- based subject to at least AS level.

For example:

- BBC at A Level including mathematics or a mathematics-based subject plus at least one other from physics, physical science, engineering science, computer science, technology, chemistry or other science or technology subject.

- DMM in BTEC Extended Diploma in a science or technology-based subject (including passes in mathematics and two other science or technology-based modules).

Or A combination of qualifications which must include mathematics or a mathematics-based subject and may include AS levels, EPQ and general studies.

Or, relevant work experience

Desirable

A-level in Science (or equivalent),

ONC/HNC in Materials Science.
