Vacancy - Trainee Pilot

  • Are you excited by the opportunity to pilot all types/sizes of vessels within the Medway Pilotage District? Are you an experienced Marine Officer with extensive ship handling experience? We are seeking a Trainee Pilot to join our team at the Port of Sheerness and help us keep the world moving
    Your Role
  • You will facilitate the safe and efficient conduct of navigation of vessels within the Medway Pilotage District, and Thames Estuary, in accordance with applicable regulations. Piloting all types and sizes of vessels, with or without the use of tugs, you will adhere to the Marine Management Safe Systems of Work and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • You will prepare and agree passage plans to allow vessels to perform their arrival, berthing and departure safely. Working as part of a team to ensure safety and operational requirements are met. Following our training program, you will work alongside Senior Pilots and gain experience on larger vessels, progressing through the pilotage class system up to the largest vessels for example Q-Max LNG Carriers. You will obtain first authorisation and progress to full Class 1 qualification within an agreed timescale. As part of the larger Marine team will support on occasion the management on adhoc projects.
    What you'll bring
  • Piloting experience is advantageous but not essential. Service as a Senior officer on board with ship handling experience is required. Varied shiptype experience would also be a benefit or holder of a Medway PEC. You will have a valid ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate (or equivalent) and preemployment company assessment, and an excellent understanding of ship manoeuvrability, handling and berthing.
  • With excellent communication skills, you will have the ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, as well as a flexible approach to working in challenging environments. Able to use initiative and experience in making quick and informed decisions, even under demanding situations. A full valid driving licence is required for the role.
