The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Driven by government's aim for clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas, MMO's purpose is to protect and enhance our precious marine environment, and support UK economic growth by enabling sustainable marine activities and development.
We are a team of around 400 people and combine our Newcastle upon Tyne and London operations with a local presence around the English coastline in Brixham, Beverley, Harwich, Hastings, Lowestoft, North Shields, Hayle, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Preston, Scarborough, Shoreham, Whitehaven.

Job description
This is a really exciting time to join the MMO as we become an independent coastal state, embedding new repatriated functions and services with an increased focus on the protection and enhancing of the marine environment.
There are two posts to cover the role of Head of Marine Licensing Operations, post holders will work closely to ensure consistency and resilience across the team.
You will ensure effective delivery through others, whilst providing operational leadership to the casework team.You will work collaboratively with the Head of Marine Licensing Quality and Support to ensure the optimum performance of the Licensing case work team.
You will be integral to ensuring day-to-day working relationships with our primary advisors is effective to ensure efficient service delivery in line with performance measures.
Leading on the continuous improvement of the service to develop, adapt and deliver accordingly.Personal performance
- Provide a leadership role in the management of the marine licencing team, with a focus on people and service delivery performance.
- Work collectively as a member of the Marine Development Management Team (Director, Head of Marine Planning, Head of Strategic Licensing, Head of Global Marine) and with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to support organisational goals and corporate initiatives as required.
- Manage the development of the model for Marine Licensing service delivery, working across the organisation and with MMO Planning and Change.
- Manage and lead the implementation of process improvements.
- Provide a senior leadership role in the MMO including as a member of SLT, role modelling the MMO's principles, values and behaviours expected
- Ensure the organisational priorities are communicated and understood by your direct reports and cascaded accordingly
- Deputise for G6 Head of Marine Licensing Service Delivery when required.
Specific role areas
- Work collectively with Licencing Management Team to ensure overall excellence of licencing team and service.
- Oversee and manage Marine Licensing case work and assure service delivery.
- Manage and support Senior Case Managers to deliver the marine licensing blueprint.
- Quality check the service provision in line with processes to ensure customer satisfaction
- Liaise with the MMO communications team, relevant case teams and business support to ensure the swift resolution of customer complaints/queries.
- Proactively seek feedback from multiple sources to continually improve the service offering.
- Ensure consistency in external communication style across the team.
- Contribute towards team meetings to communicate, inspire and coordinate progress across the team and ensure effective team working.
- Manage the Marine Licensing development and maintenance of the Marine Licensing operational risk register.
