Lead Engineer - Defence and Military Systems - Permanent - Attractive - Southwest
A
Lead Engineeris required to join an International Defence Systems company that designs, manufactures, and supports world leading military Systems. The successful
Lead Engineerwill be responsible for the design and engineering for a number of projects.

Working as part of the Engineering Team the
Lead Engineeris expected to develop the project technical requirements, produce concept design solutions, detailed designs including generating and updating 3D CAD models and 2D technical drawings.

The
Lead Engineerwill
conduct verification and test plans, assembly instructions and comprehensive reporting with support from the Principal Engineer and Engineering Director.

The
Lead Engineermay also support build and test activities, including hands on tasks where appropriate. The Lead Engineer reports to the Principal Engineer.


The
Lead Engineer will be responsible for the actioning of engineering and design activities including supporting product development and problem resolution.

They will lead their allotted team members to the best of their abilities.

The
Lead Engineer will be a very capable engineer, confident and articulate with good communication skills, able to interface with in-house colleagues, suppliers and customers.

The
Lead Engineer is expected to proactively participate in, and when necessary, lead improvement initiatives.

The
Lead Engineer metrics will be measured against sales, margin, milestone achievement, product safety, and timely implementation of continuous improvement initiatives.


Lead Engineer will be responsible for the following:

  • Contribute towards the development, implementation of Engineering Policy and Processes.
  • Contribute to the reporting on Engineering performance metrics.
  • Responsible for delivery of their own development plan and the development of their direct reports.
  • Be customer (internal and external) focused on delivery of goals, at pace.
  • Be responsible for the delivery of agreed business, people and process improvement activities.
  • Support the development of customer solutions as required to achieve sales.
  • Internal / external customer visits and technical meetings.
  • Collaboration with Operations, Programmes, Procurement, Quality and Finance as required.
  • Generate purchase requisitions where necessary for delivery of budgeted activities and hardware.
  • Deliver program, contractual and design and development deliverables as applicable to the role.
  • Create, update, approve and release 3D CAD models, 2D technical drawings and documentation.
  • Ensure the cost effectiveness of designs and track the costs against allocated budgets.
  • Work with Engineering Director, Principal Engineer, Head of Technology and Programme Managers.
  • Progress documentation through the improvement form and engineering change control processes.
  • Create and manage a record of the design calculations and the detailed documentation.
  • Lead internal\external design reviews and support prototype build and test activities.
  • Actively support continuous improvement activities throughout the business.

The Lead Engineer should have the following Qualifications Skills or Experience:

  • Degree or an equivalent combination of experience and training in mechanical or related discipline.
  • A good command of mechanical engineering fundamentals in a manufacturing environment.
  • Drive and flexibility to maintain pace of work as priorities and customer requirements change.
  • The ability to communicate designs effectively through written and verbal methods.
  • A strong team player and the ability to produce high quality output with attention to detail.
  • A handson approach able and willing to perform tasks effectively.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of design, design analysis, verification and validation.
  • Support techniques such as CAD, FEA, FMECA, DFM to ensure manufacturing engineering and quality.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of PDM and ERP software.
  • Willingness and ability to travel worldwide and the ability to obtain a UK SC clearance.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development and education.
  • UK driving licence and Chartered Engineer status with a relevant UK professional body preferred.
  • Experience in a design/manufacturing environment and experience of SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD.
  • Experience of hydraulics and highpressure oil and gas sealing technologies.

Security Clearance (SC) may be required due to the nature of the Defence products involved
