Circa £32,000 + benefits

12 month fixed term contract

35 hours per week

The role


As Senior Public Affairs Officer you will work as part of the CIPD Public Affairs team alongside the CIPD Public Policy team and colleagues internally to develop ways to maximize the external profile of the CIPD amongst important stakeholders in the world of work, including policy makers, politicians, civil servants, business leaders, senior CIPD members, think tanks and other influencers.


What you'll be doing

  • Supporting the delivery of our overall public affairs and stakeholder engagement strategy
  • Advocacy of the CIPD and HR/L&D profession to policy makers, politicians, civil servants and other audiences to influence wider debate around the world of work and to support better work and working lives
  • Working with colleagues to amplify CIPD's voice on key public policy issues and helping to formulate policy campaigns in line with strategic objectives
  • Daily political horizonscanning and parliamentary monitoring, identifying and tracking public policy developments to ensure CIPD capitalize on opportunities to further our public policy goals
  • Managing consultation and parliamentary inquiry responses with relevant policy advisers and seeking input from our members
  • Managing relationships with key member and employer stakeholder contacts to involve in collaborative policy and public affairs activities
  • This role will require occasional travel to events in the UK parliament with occasional travel to events or meetings outside of London.

What you'll need to be successful

  • Demonstrable experience and understanding of the public policy arena, preferably with some experience of developing public affairs campaigns
  • Experience of working in Whitehall or Westminster, in a political or parliamentary environment or in a public affairs role.
  • An interest and knowledge of current affairs, demonstrable political judgement and an understanding of how to engage with and influence policy
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Able to produce engaging content for public affairs audiences, using CIPD research and other relevant external sources.
  • An understanding of campaign planning, stakeholder mapping and best practice in engaging with key political and policy stakeholders
  • Excellent organisational skills and an ability to work to tight deadlines when needed
