Job description


We have opportunity for experienced support workers for both day and waking night shifts to join our Care Homes for service users with moderate to severe learning disabilities and challenging behaviour.


The ethos of our home is to provide a homely and family-like environment to our service users who are also encouraged and supported wherever possible to participate fully in the local community.

They will require assistance with cooking, cleaning, going to the cinema, doctor's appointment, the shops, the park, day trips etc.


You will work as part of a team providing an environment where people with complex and challenging needs are encouraged to live as independently as possible, using the assertive model of engagement and individually tailored support plans to form the basis for effective interventions.

To support the young people to develop and expand their life skills so that they can lead full and active lives and access the community.


Principal Responsibilities:


  • To assist young people in all activities of daily living according to their individual care plans.
  • To offer appropriate support physical, emotional and psychological to individual young person, supporting clients to manage their personal care and health needs.
  • To assist all our clients in the areas of nutritional and cultural requirements.
  • To assist young people who need help with getting up in the morning, dressing, undressing, washing, bathing and the toilet.
  • To organise and provide appropriate support for young people preparing to moveon to greater independence, including support through the move and resettlement into their new home.
  • To ensure that the young people are as fully involved as possible in decisions which affect them individually.
  • To contribute to the protection of the young people from any form of abuse, reporting any bad practices.
  • To ensure that the young peoples personal property and clothing is maintained to a high standard, reporting any issues to the Home Manager or the Deputy.
  • To support & escort young people to appointments, day trips, places of worship and other social settings.
  • To assist in creating a warm, stimulating and welcoming environment where our our young people can grow and achieve their potential.

Work Related Experience:


  • Previous experience of working with vulnerable young people, children, adults with learning disability or mental health disorder in a residential or a community/day care setting or related field is desirable. Training will be provided.
  • To have achieved an NVQ level 2/3 or be committed to achieving this. Training can be provided.
  • Experience of teaching independent living skills using a variety of different forms of communication.
  • Ability to keep clear and accurate records.
  • Good communicator and excellent interpersonal skills and good organisational skills.
  • Ability to be an active, enthusiastic, team player and the ability to work on own initiative
  • Commitment to good practice and a team approach to work
  • Understanding of the principles of valuing young people.
  • All staff are required to respect the confidentiality of all matters that they might learn in the course of their employment.
  • Commitment to equal opportunity and challenging any discriminatory and oppressive practices.
  • An understanding of the needs and issues facing vulnerable young people.
  • Ability to promote young peoples involvement and participation in the service.

Due to the nature of the work the post holder will be required to work shifts including weekends evening, bank holidays and possibly night duties.
