In this role you will

Histopathology assay delivery:

  • Be responsible to develop, innovate and implement cutting edge lightsheet technology for 3D analysis of animal and human samples, as well as all data acquisition, integration with other spatial biology data, and interpretation.
  • Provide scientific and technical expertise to experimental design and contribute to the scientific interpretation of data, including generating reports and figures for publications (where required)
  • Work in partnership with project teams and key stakeholders to identify scientific gaps in project plans and devise strategy for resolution, provide input and report data to matrix teams, including close networking with all imaging groups across GSK.
  • Lead histopathology scientific investigations by undertaking literature review and presenting findings at group, departmental meeting and symposia
  • When required, deliver Molecular Histology (IHC/IF/ISH) or Spatial Multiplex Imaging packages of work in support of project teams with no supervision.

Laboratory process improvement:

  • Create a strategy, evaluate risk/benefit and deploy and implement a LIMS system for nonclinical/research histology laboratory, including the implementation of digital image curation, storage and annotation.
  • Lead the development/acquisition of software and hardware solutions for data acquisition and analysis, including equipment interfacing, connectivity and transfer of functionality and data from legacy systems. Improve databases, systems and processes within the team for recording and analysis of data of all types
  • Prepare tissues for subsequent digital image acquisition and generation of virtual histological staining, including running qualitative and quantitative assessments to directly measure the degree of agreement between the virtually generated histological images and their chemically stained counterparts (ground truth).

General expectations:

  • For all studies ensure all wet lab activities, including tissue trimming and embedding, microtomy, molecular histology and slide scanning are performed in accordance with the study protocol, all applicable laws, regulations and departmental Standard Operating Procedures and met the highquality technical standards.
  • Monitor the scientific literature, vendor products, webinars and conferences to identify new technology that could delivery transformational benefits to the quality and or efficiency of decisionmaking data by Non Clinical Histology. Assimilate and present use cases to justify future investment.
  • Provide advice, training, and support to members of the group/department as appropriate.
  • Take responsibility for one or more operational roles such as lab management, equipment maintenance, safety representative roles as may be assigned by line manager

Basic Qualifications & Skills:


We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor's degree in a Life Sciences related discipline; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Extensive experience in deploying and implementing LIMS system for nonclinical/research histology laboratory
  • Experience performing tissue clearing techniques on various tissue types followed by volumetric image acquisition to visualize organs and organoids at the cellular level in fixed samples.
  • Experience of Virtual staining and /or deep learningbased methods to digitally generate histological stains (H&E and Special Staining)
  • Proven track record of leading complex matrix projects through conception, and delivery
  • Evidence of being able to develop strong interpersonal relationships with colleagues with a diverse set of skills and experience
  • Good knowledge of routine histology, single and multiplex IHC and ISH staining protocol optimization and image analysis (Halo, Visiopharm).
  • Experience using one or more light sheetbased volumetric imaging modalities.
  • Experience in image data visualization by using both commercial and open source software packages.
