We are seeking a Health & Safety and Environment Specialist to join our dedicated team in Newcastle.


Working Mon - Fri, 08:30 - 17:00, you'll be providing competent advice to the business, monitoring & contributing to compliance within UK/EU legislation, whilst adhering to company standards as defined in the DFDS Safety Management System framework.

Based in a very busy operational environment, acting as a point of contact for departmental managers on matters of occupational/operational health and safety as well as environmental matters.

Ensuring continuous development, undertaking compliance checks against company standards on matters of health and safety and ensuring full compliance is maintained and areas for continuous improvement established.

Providing support and guidance to the business in maintaining it's 45001 accreditations, also, in the investigation of incidents & accidents ensuring they are probed thoroughly, the root cause is established and acted upon to avoid reoccurrence.

You shall be joining a forward-thinking team, who will ensure your integration into the department is seamless and accommodating.

We require an engaging individual who can dynamically adapt to work, manage their own workload commitments, to ensure delivery of the collective strategic goals.

Coordinating with line managers ensuring safe operations are maintained through guidance, support, and coaching. Attending various meetings & working groups. You would also be trained to join the DFDS Culture Champions network.


Job Role involves:


  • Practical working knowledge as a champion in Health and Safety.
  • Excellent working knowledge of HSE Management Systems; HSG65 is essential.
  • Responsible for improving systems and processes.
  • A pragmatic riskbased approach to health and safety management.
  • Development, implementation and maintenance of health and safety policies and procedures across the site.
  • Provide appropriate advice and guidance to a wide range of stakeholders, to ensure the ongoing effectiveness of HS&E systems, processes, and policy to enable safe working and environmental compliance.
  • Responsible for performing health and safety inspections, audits, and undertaking safety investigations on accidents and serious near misses / property damage.
  • Check safety equipment across the site.
  • Collect, monitor and document HSE metrics/documentation and action plans and communicate these with relevant stakeholders.
  • Complete HSE inductions.
  • Ensuring environmental compliance is well integrated and understood throughout all of our functions.
  • Monitoring and reporting environmental performance
  • Seeking opportunities to enhance awareness and environmental performance.
  • Engaging with key internal and external stakeholders including contractors, regulators, and enforcement agencies.
  • Managing Health and Safety documentation, monthly and quarterly reporting.
  • Keeping up to date with legislation and regulation changes in the industry.
  • Provide advice, training and coaching to other managers and employees, as required.
  • Delivering briefings to colleagues on safety initiatives and campaigns as directed by DFDS Group H&S.
  • To have an interest in sustainability, participating in the Sustainability Project Team for the Passenger Organisation and making proposals for initiatives to drive our sustainability agenda.
