About the Team

This role sits within our Media Literacy Team, which forms part of Ofcom's Strategy and Policy Team. Ofcom has duties to promote media literacy.

Purpose of the Role


In 2019, we established the Making Sense of Media (MSOM) programme to ensure that we were able to deliver against this duty with respect to online services and this included the creation of the MSOM Network and Panel.


The programme has 5 elements to it:

engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, developing skills-based training for under-served communities, working with online services to build in media literacy by design, developing thinking and practice on evaluating what works and continuing our extensive research programme.

The role will have the opportunity to work across all 5 areas of our work as the programme requires.

Key Responsibilities

Working closely with our Senior Associates across the programme you will:

  • Work across media literacy and the online safety / regime
  • Support on publications and consultation papers
  • Attend and report back on external events and share insights and learnings
  • Provide briefings for more senior colleagues, identifying relevant points in the cycle to update on stakeholder engagement and seek steers on approach.
  • Support our events programme, working with colleagues in Ofcom and externally
  • Support the programme directors as required
  • Support on team organisation activity (meetings, logs of activity, internal reporting etc.)
Skills, knowledge and experience

The essential skills for the role are:

  • Relationship building skills: You should be able to build and maintain working relationships with a broad range of people, including industry stakeholders, and colleagues across Ofcom
  • Policy development experience: You should have some experience of the policy development process
  • Stakeholder engagement experience: Essential to have some experience of stakeholder engagement activity including stakeholder mapping, and stakeholder strategy development
  • Communication skills: You should have excellent written communication skills and have experience of writing briefings, meeting agendas and meeting notes as well as reports. You must be a confident and articulate verbal communicator, able to communicate to different audiences using a variety of skills
  • Teamwork skills: You should be able to demonstrate planning and organisational skills, and the ability to collaborate with and incorporate insights from a range of colleagues, and be adaptable as priorities change

The desirable skills for this role are:

  • Online and media literacy knowledge: It would be helpful if you had some knowledge of the online sector and/or the media literacy sector and stakeholders in the UK
  • Analytical skills: You should be able to demonstrate your ability to think creatively about problems and develop effective, evidence-based solutions
