Locum Consultant in General Emergency Surgery

A Locum Consultant in Emergency General Surgery is available now at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


The post is to join a team of six Consultants providing leadership and service at all stages of the emergency surgery pathway from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care.

The service is supported by an on-call rota which includes other Consultant general surgery colleagues.

In addition to the 6 Consultant Emergency General Surgeons, the service comprises of 5 Senior Clinical Fellows, 4 Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Consultant Peri-Operative Physician input.


The job is primarily based in Emergency General Surgery, there is an elective surgery component to the job plan comprising about 20% of the job plan.


Whilst colorectal, OG and HPB cancer work will be carried out in the emergency setting there will not be an opportunity to carry out dedicated elective cancer work in the elective weeks of the job plan.

Emergency General Surgery is within the Directorate of Surgery. The Directorate includes Upper and Lower gastrointestinal Surgery, Breast Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, and Acute General Surgery.

Elective services are based at the Churchill and Horton Hospitals and Emergency services based at the John Radcliffe Hospital.


Emergency General Surgery is supported with appropriate access to CEPOD theatre lists, ITU and HDU critical care support, perioperative care, a surgical ambulatory unit, and timely access to all diagnostic services, including endoscopy an interventional radiology.


The Unit sees between patients per week with the surgical ambulatory care unit seeing up to 100 patients per week.


As a guide, approximately NELA laparotomies, 30-50 Trauma laparotomies and acute laparoscopic cholecystectomies are performed within the unit acutely each year.

The Directorate of Surgery is within the Division of Surgery and Oncology which includes:
Renal, Transplant and Urology, Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Theatres. Oncology and Haematology, Gynaecology and Obstetrics


Delivery of a safe and effective 24 /7 consultant led General Emergency general surgery service providing and supporting the multidisciplinary team at all stages of the emergency surgery pathway from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care.


As a teaching hospital Trust, the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations.

It is expected that teaching will be an integral part of every day clinical activity.


The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
