About Us:

Purple Elephant in the Room is a progressive and innovative organisation that works with families across the South-West.

We have recently opened a NACCC accredited Contact Centre to support children to have family time with parents and other family members who they may not live with or otherwise.

Due to a significant increase in the number of sessions taking place we are looking for
BANK staff to join our centre team.

We are particularly interested in applicants who can work weekends and afterschool hours as this is when most family time sessions take place.

If you would like to help families spend quality time together, this could be the job for you.

The primary role of the Family Time Supervisor is to support children to have safe and enjoyable time with their parents and family members.

You will be based in our contact centre but will also work in other child friendly spaces in the community.

Role and responsibilities

  • Your main responsibility will be ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the children.
  • You will be responsible for the care and support of the child if the parents experience difficulties for any reason.
  • Your main role will be recording factual information based on your observations.
  • The level of observation required will vary and you will know your individual responsibility to ensure this is met through the contact plan that is provided to you.
  • The support you provide to each family will vary. It may involve encouraging, teaching, modelling and supporting the parents in a number of specific parenting tasks such as managing challenging behaviour, developing understanding of health needs, basic care, ensuring their child's safety at home and in the community and sharing knowledge.
  • You will be able to share your recordings effectively with parents and discuss feedback confidently with the parents to support their development.
  • You will support parents by helping to deliver a variety of groups and workshops.
  • You will help cover the reception desk to ensure all visitors to the centre feel welcome and have the required information.
  • You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of social workers, family support workers and health professionals to ensure that the children and family's needs are best.

Our Family Time Supervisors have:

  • The ability to communicate respectfully, sensitively and empathetically with children and adults.
  • The ability to work within guidance and safety plans to ensure the correct level of observation is afforded to the child.
  • The ability to build good working relationships with families.
  • The ability to deescalate challenging behaviours.
  • Practical knowledge and understanding of child development and the needs of children throughout their life.
  • The ability to be entirely nonjudgmental and committed to supporting people in difficult circumstances.
  • The ability to record accurate and objective, factual information based on your conversations and observations.
  • The ability to challenge where appropriate.
  • The ability to stay calm under pressure and manage crisis with the support of managers.
  • Good organisational and IT skills.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

What you need:

  • UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (Desirable)
  • Ability to work a combination of days, evenings and weekends (Desirable)
  • Childcare, nursing, or social work background (Desirable)
  • Therapeutic skills (Desirable)

It is a requirement that all new staff who do not have a Level 3 Qualification are willing to work towards a minimum Level 3 Children and Young People's Workforce Diploma (including mandatory social care units) if they do not already hold this qualification or an equivalent qualification.
