Yorkshire Cancer Research is entering an exciting period in its development. As part of this, we are expanding our team and a number of new roles are being created. As such, we are now looking for a Service Officer to support our Research, Services and Policy team.


The Role


Yorkshire Cancer Research is embarking on an exciting programme to transform and improve the survival and quality of life of cancer patients.


Active Together is a multimodal prehabilitation and rehabilitation programme that has been developed by world leading academics and practitioners at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) at Sheffield Hallam University and funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research.


The Active Together Programme is designed to prepare people with cancer to undergo, and to recover quickly from, their treatment.

The service also assists them to maintain healthy lifestyles after their cancer diagnosis.

Research evidence shows that exercise, part of the Active Together Programme, can increase the chances of surviving cancer and improves the quality of life of cancer patients.


The charity will be delivering an Active Together Service through our new Yorkshire Cancer Research Centre at Hornbeam Park, Harrogate.

The service will be open to cancer patients in North Yorkshire and Leeds.


We are seeking a pro-active, enthusiastic, and experienced Service Officer to join our dynamic team to help us implement and support the delivery of this new exercise rehabilitation service.


Reporting to the Health Initiatives and Services Manager, as our Service Officer, you will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day running of the Active Together Harrogate service including class bookings, service user liaison, key stakeholder engagement and supporting the evaluation of the service.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the delivery of an innovative service that is at the leading edge of healthcare provision in cancer care in the community.


Specifically, you will:

  • Take referrals, basic eligibility queries and coordinate bookings, working closely with the Lead Fitness Instructor of the Active Together Service and other healthcare professionals ensuring consultations and classes are appropriately booked.
  • Ensure SystmOne and any other data management tools are accurate and kept uptodate, handling sensitive health information in line with GDPR and running regular reports using the data.
  • Collect key performance indicators (KPI's) and service level measures as agreed, to be presented as part of monthly and annual performance reports.
  • Undertake an active role in data collection and data cleaning for the evaluation of the service.
  • Manage the daytoday running of the service, including preparing registers and timetables and ensuring exercise studios / assessment rooms are prepared for appointments.
  • Communicate directly with members of the public in order to provide information about the service to prospective service users, their friends, family, and the general public.
  • Provide support to the service delivery team in the planning, coordinating, and effective and safe delivery of the service.
  • Assist with communications and the promotion of activities/services following an established set of protocols and principles, in collaboration with other areas delivering the Active Together programme as required.
  • Support the development of online and publicfacing resources and proactively ensure information is kept up to date and accurate e.g., social media channels and designated websites.
  • Work collaboratively across the multidisciplinary service team to provide consistent and highquality service provision; liaise with stakeholders and colleagues; share information and represent the area in working groups and meetings.
