Description

We have an exciting opportunity in the Materials Science and Engineering department for someone to contribute to the development of innovative and sustainable steel production in the UK.

The SUSTAIN Future Manufacturing Research Hub is a £35M project funded by £10M of EPSRC funds as well as by Universities, Trade Bodies, RTOs and Businesses over 7 years and aims to support the industry as we develop new, more environmentally friendly options to ensure the future of manufacturing of steel in the UK.

You will work in a leading steel research team in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, as well as working alongside other steel related research groups at the University of Sheffield and other top UK universities.

This project will also be closely supported by industry, and so there will be opportunities to interface with production and research teams from the UK steel industry.

The Research Associate will be the main contributor to the research task Alloy Optimisation for Sustainable Metallurgy in Theme 5 (New Processes for New Products) of the SUSTAIN research portfolio.

The project will focus on the role of austenite conditioning and ausforming to develop novel microstructures in a range of advanced high strength steels with the ultimate aim of reducing the reliance on alloy additions.

The role of residual elements will be an important part of the study. You will be responsible for manufacturing steels from melting through to thermomechanical processing. You will undertake extensive characterisation of the steel microstructure and mechanical properties and correlate these with the process route. This will lead to recommendations to improve the steel products.

Applicants will have a PhD (or be close to completion) in materials science, engineering, physical science, or other relevant discipline.

We're one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK.

The University's Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect.

We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
