Job Overview


TfL are responsible for over 2000km of carriageway, footway, bus lane and cycleway on the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN), this job is your opportunity to be part of providing a safe and reliable road network for everyone in London to travel on.

The Data and Inspection Officer role is an essential part of the Asset Operations (Road, Bus and River) department making sure the day-to-day maintenance of the TLRN is based on high quality operational asset data that you feed into through the collection of consistent and accurate carriageway/footway condition information, and the timely manipulation of the data into condition reports.

You'll be expected to provide timely feedback and urgently flag any risks on the safety, condition and data quality of our assets to the benefit of the wider Asset Operations team, and the decisions we make to optimise the performance of the network assets.

You should have a knowledge and experience of UKPMS principles and activities, and be a practitioner of Detailed Visual Inspections (DVIs) to succeed in this position.


The role is site and central London office based, with more time spent on site than in the office, and there is home working available too in place of some office days.

Site work is London-wide, involves travel on public transport, and lone working.


Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the collection and collation of accurate carriageway/footway asset data in a consistent format, prioritising and distributing outputs to internal TfL stakeholders according to agreed processes
  • Responsible for asset inventory assurance, including system administration and contractor assurance to ensure consistency and accuracy of data
  • Responsible for accurate and timely entry of data into multiple Asset Management Systems, including UKPMS related software, GIS systems, Maximo etc
  • Support the successful handover of new and amended assets data into Asset Operations management
  • Identify opportunities for TfL asset improvements through collected data and general observations and liaison with internal TfL stakeholders
  • Support the Data & Inspection Manager in managing the contracts/relationships with key suppliers

Key Interfaces

  • The Data and Inspections Officer will ensure effective interfaces with customers and stakeholders including:
  • Asset Operations regional Operations teams and TfL Engineering team to assist in the identification of issues and focus inspections in geographic areas of interest
  • Internal stakeholders within TfL with particular focus on Asset Strategy, Engineering, and Commercial
  • External stakeholders (such as suppliers / contractors delivering maintenance or condition inspections)

  • An understanding of UKPMS principles Essential
  • Knowledge of data collection techniques (including DVI (Detailed Visual Inspections))
