An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Receptionist to join our team in the Antenatal Clinic at Southmead Hospital.


This is an exciting role working within a fast-paced and busy outpatient environment, working closely with clinical colleagues to ensure our patients receive the highest standard of care.

The role requires excellent attention to detail and good organisational skills, working in a busy and high-pressure environment.

You will act as the first point of contact for patients and carers visiting the antenatal clinic, and also the last contact when booking their next appointment, and are therefore have great influence over the patient experience.


Receptionists are an integral part of the antenatal clinic administration team, who provide essential support to the clinicians and to the women using our services.

The team are responsible for covering a range of clerical duties including reception, booking appointments for sonography, midwife and obstetrician clinics and answering telephone enquiries.


  • To provide a reception service for the antenatal clinic, including greeting women and their families, checking them in, booking walkin and followup appointments, taking payment for scan pictures, and cashing up.
  • To prepare notes for all clinics in advance
  • To ensure accurate data input for all appointments.
  • To assist in the provision of a clean, tidy and smooth running environment for patients and their families/ carers.
  • To develop organisational skills through planning a workload and prioritising needs.
  • To contribute to a learning environment.
  • To support the antenatal administration and clinical teams.
Patients are the most important people in the Health Service and are at the centre of what we do.

Patients and carers are the 'experts' in how they feel and what it is like to live with or care for someone with a particular illness or condition.

The patients' experience of our services should guide the way we deliver services and influence how we engage with patients every day in our work.


All staff should communicate effectively in their day to day practice with patients and should support and enable patients/carers to make choices, changes and influence the way their treatment or care is provided.

All staff, managers and Board members should work to promote effective patient, carer and public involvement in all elements of their work

  • To act as Receptionist for welcoming and orientating patients and visitors to the unit.
  • To participate in the preparation and the running of the Reception.
  • To answer enquiries from patients, clinical staff and other colleagues, dealing with enquiries in a professional manner and referring to the relevant person where necessary.
  • To prepare clinic notes ensuring all relevant documentation is included.
  • To ensure all outcomes are completed on the PAS system.
  • To book follow up appointments.
  • To maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • To provide annual leave and sickness cover as required.
  • To participate in training and development opportunities when appropriate
  • To undertake any other duties appropriate to the post as agreed by the team leader.
