Your New Role:

Are you passionate about protecting and safeguarding the environment and the wildlife within it?


As a Principal Environmental Consultant you will be responsible for building, mentoring and leading a team throughout the project lifecycle on large multi-million pound, high profile infrastructure schemes.

You will be responsible for making decisions that will directly impact our ability to protect wildlife and create an environment for nature to thrive for many years to come.


Your Environmental and Sustainability team will work alongside our award-winning design, maintenance and construction teams who transform our roads, railways and public buildings and deliver the critical support services the country relies on every day.

You will do this by leading and guiding the team with resource planning, quality and forecasting strategies, to ensure the best outcome for them and the biodiversity they support.

You will lead the team to make sure the work completed is aligned to current environmental best practice and strive to raise the standards of our technical reporting and project delivery efficiency.


The salary is £ - Depending on experience

You will be responsible for:


  • Noise & Air Quality
  • Ecology and Protected Species
  • Habitat Management and Invasive species
  • Landscape and Visual
  • Heritage
  • Water Quality and Flood Risk
  • Organising and coordinating meetings with statutory authorities and stakeholders.
  • Working with design and construction teams to ensure that the relevant environmental surveys, permits and licences have been carried out/obtained within set timeframes without compromising the construction programme.
  • Attend engineering integration meetings and be able to authoritatively communicate key environmental requirements to ensure they are captured within preliminary and detailed design.
  • Liaising with Principal Contractors during Early Contractor Involvement phases to ensure full awareness of environmental and sustainability requirements. Both planning related, regulatory and contractual.
  • Point of contact with full(environmental) responsibility for particular route sections and all associated outputs & products required to drive design through various phases.
  • Identify, forecast and resource environmental survey requirements in relation to both the design and construction programmes.
  • Leading the design teams and contractors through the CEEQUAL process where CEEQUAL Excellent is expected to be achieved.
  • Ensuring health and safety issues are addressed throughout the project and ensuring that all environmental consultants are aware of the project requirements.
  • Prioritising project actions and meeting commitments on an ongoing basis while taking ownership and responsibility for the quality and completion of work

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • A strong undergraduate degree in Geography, Geo-environmental, Earth Science, Environmental or similar/equivalent.
  • A relevant masters degree in a discipline associated with Environmental Science, Sustainable Development or similar (desirable).
  • A minimum of 6 years demonstrable postgraduate experience preferably in a professional consultancy role (or similar) encompassing infrastructure projects.
  • Full Membership (or working towards) of IEMA or equivalent.
  • Chartered status (CEnv, CSci)
  • Have experience working to deliver sustainable solutions and outcomes; through both design and construction.
  • Knowledge of the planning process and permitted development would be beneficial.
  • Experience of working on infrastructure projects.
  • Experience of working closely with regulatory authorities and various stakeholders.
  • Experience of working with a team of multiskilled environmental and sustainability consultants and/or thirdparty contractors.
  • Be confident in making key decisions on a daily basis.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to plan and deliver works in line with budgets and programme deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss environmental and sustainability issues and capture feedback.
  • Health and Safety awareness, especially safe working practices and risk assessment related to fieldwork.
  • Valid driving licence.
