Description

Position Details:

Current PhD research at the Institute of Zoology focuses on utilizing camera traps to estimate badger density as part of bovine TB control efforts.

Through this project we have obtained a collection of images of a range of species, providing an opportunity to study the density and behaviour of other mammals and how this may relate to badgers.

Our current emphasis is on extracting insights about deer, fox, and hare populations based on a recent extensive camera survey.

We are in search of volunteers who are interested in the analysis and processing of camera trap data, as well as providing support in generating density estimates.

Overview of the Role:

Commitment of role:

We are seeking one or two volunteers to assist in the analysis of camera trap data for 1-2 days per week to start in September 2023.

We expect the role to last approximately 3 months.

However, if volunteers express an interest to contribute for an extended duration, there's an opportunity for further data analysis, and the role can be extended accordingly.

Main tasks volunteer will be asked to undertake:
Assisting with camera trap analysis by obtaining position data for mammals present in camera surveys. This will involve using a computer program to 'track' animals in images.

Additional extension tasks include:

  • Tagging animals in camera trap images.
  • Preparing other data required for density analysis.
  • Writing/running code to obtain density estimates (note: experience of using R would be an advantage but is not a requirement)

NB. There is no direct contact with animals in this role.

Anticipated qualities, skills and experience that the volunteer will bring:

  • Commitment to attend induction and ongoing training.
  • Ability to demonstrate ZSL's values inspiring, innovative, impactful, collaborative, ethical and inclusive.
NB Volunteers must be aged over 16+ years

Skills and experience volunteer will gain:

  • The opportunity to be involved in an international conservation charity.
  • The opportunity to work with an excellent highly motivated research/fieldwork team.
  • Experience in camera trap data analysis, coding and some knowledge of machinelearning tools.
  • Training and an opportunity to learn new skills.

Relevant training may include:

  • ZSL site induction.
  • Induction to the role and software to undertake role.
  • Basic training in R if coding tasks are undertaken.
Beyond this, we will offer a regular programme of appropriate refresher training and learning opportunities. There will also be opportunities to attend ZSL updates.
