An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced sonographer to join the Imaging team at West Middlesex University Hospital on a one-year interim basis, during a period of transformational change.

They will need to inspire the team around them and provide confidence for the Head of Imaging that the service is in excellent hands.


The post holder is responsible for the leadership and management of the day to day operations of the Ultrasound Service which encompasses six ultrasound rooms and relevant staff.


The post holder will be responsible for efficient service delivery within national waiting times, according to established referral protocols and Clinical Lead.


There will be a significant clinical element to the role which will include the undertaking of complex ultrasound studies and teaching.

As such, the post holder will be expected to have a post graduate certificate or diploma in one or more ultrasound subspecialties and relative substantial experience.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • To demonstrate strong leadership skills and to perform management duties to a high standard.
  • To ensure that patients receive a high standard of care at all times.
  • To be expert in all Ultrasound imaging procedures. Additionally the postholder will be expected to be proficient, and to teach, in the more specialised techniques practiced in the specialty.
  • To ensure all images generated within the department have reached an optimum standard and quality.
  • To offer an assessment, interpretation and report from images produced by themselves or junior staff. Offer education and support with relation to image interpretation and primary diagnosis.
  • The post holder will be expected to analyse information pertaining to clinical issues and resource management within their own modality.
  • To assist with the practical training of radiologists, junior staff and student sonographers.
  • To ensure competencies of all staff working within the area are maintained and reviewed annually.
  • To communicate with other staff members to ensure the smooth running of the entire department.
  • To ensure the maintenance and servicing of all equipment within the department is performed, offering expert advice in the event of an equipment replacement programme.
  • To ensure that local rules are strictly adhered to.
  • To ensure that the rules and procedures of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 are strictly adhered to, and that all working areas are kept clean and safe.
  • To undertake risk assessments where necessary and action any outcomes generated from risk assessments.
  • To participate in the departmental quality assurance programmes as required.
  • To report and record all equipment faults. To be able to assist with the diagnosis and remedy of routine faults and liaise with engineers where appropriate.
  • To coordinate and participate in any extension to the core working day as required.
  • To ensure the safe storage and administration of drugs and contrast.
  • To undertake any other duties which may be deemed appropriate to the post.
