8.15am - 4.30pm, early finish on Fridays. Flex on start and finish times.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for the mechanical design of a wide range of standard and special purpose machines and tooling.

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will take the technical lead on specific projects as identified by the Technical Director/Engineering Manageror Team Managers.

In addition will assist the Engineering Manager in coaching other Mechanical Engineers to develop Design skills and work to the departmental processes.


  • The mechanical design of standard and special purpose machine, carrying out detailed mechanical design work including 3D modelling, prototyping and design verification testing, as required.
  • Agreeing the mechanical design approach with the Engineering Manager, responsible for ensuring the design fully complies with machine specification, Safety regulations and CE compliance.
  • Responsible for mechanical component selection taking into consideration standardisation, obsolescence, availability and cost.
  • Keeps up to date with the latest manufacturing techniques and drawing standards.
  • Responsible for creation of 2D drawings to allow manufacture or purchase.
  • Responsible for production of Customer Sign off drawings for new orders.
  • Responsible for generation of Assembly drawings and bills of materials.
  • Available for onsite customer support (presentations and fault finding) as required.
  • Responsible for checking drawing/parts libraries are up to date and responsible for checking and validating Mechanical Engineers designs and drawings where required.
  • Develop effective relationships with all internal and external stakeholder, customers and suppliers to ensure best outcomes.

Person Specification:


  • Proven ability to understand/produce technical drawings with experience designing within the automation or machine tool industry.
  • Ability to coordinate with the other discipline Engineers (electrical, pneumatics and software) within the department to produce multidisciplinary design solutions.
  • Able to report mechanical design status on the assigned tasks whenever asked.
  • Set an example to the other members of the mechanical design team on how to manage designs.
  • Confident, proactive character, with ability to take the lead in challenging situations.
  • Selfmotivated and enthusiastic
  • Good communication skills, dealing with other employees and external clients at all levels.
  • Excellent IT skills, any leading 3D CAD package can be considered.
  • Full passport with ability to travel internationally for occasional customer visits.
