We are seeking an innovative enthusiastic Neighbourhood Assistant, ideally with a background in a nursing assistant role, with the ability to perform administration duties; to work within our Community IV Therapy Team across the Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Coast Locality.


The service supports the Trust's Unscheduled Care Agenda providing an alternative pathway that will treat people at home or in a clinic setting in order to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and facilitate early safe discharge.

This is an opportunity to work in a team that will collaborate with both Primary and Secondary Care Providers to provide suitable patients with specialist care in the community


As a Neighbourhood Assistant in the IV Team, you will be expected to assist in the delivery of nursing care for patients in their own home or clinic setting, as well as supporting the Nurses with tasks within the secondary care setting.

This post requires a proactive individual with the motivation and compassion to care for patients in the community.

The individual will be expected to meet the criteria within the job description by providing a nursing assistant and administration role within the team.

Previous nursing assistant experience and car driver essential. Venepuncture, Cannulation and administration experience preferable, however full training will be offered. CRB clearance required.

The Community Intravenous Therapy Service provides community IV treatment to patients within Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.

The service aims to work closely with both secondary and community care services to not only reduce unnecessary hospital admission, but also support early discharges where safe to do so.

It is important that staff are able to talk to members of the wider MDT in order to support in this streamlined delivery of care.

In line with the Department of Health guidelines, the Trust operates a strict smoke free policy.

Assist in the care of patients in the clinic or home environment. Assist the IV Nurses when assessing or undertaking a procedure in both primary and secondary care. You will often be working unsupervised, but to the instructions of a registered nurse within the IV Service.


Specific duties will include, following appropriate training:

  • Taking and recording observations of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiration. Recording height and weight.
  • Urinalysis and specimen taking as per protocol
  • Assisting in the examination of patients.
  • Undertake planned/regular venepuncture in line with national and local policies.
  • Work unsupervised in the treatment room
  • Blood monitoring testing for diabetic patients
  • To cannulate patients as requested by a registered nurse
  • To provide chaperoning duties as required, supporting the clinical team including medical staff in the efficient running of clinics.
  • To assist in the insertion of midlines and PICC's.
  • Set up and take down clinical rooms prior to and after usage, ensuring all equipment is available and decontaminated at all times as per trust policy
  • Carry out, after appropriate training, identified clerical tasks within the service. Authorisation will be performed by the Lead Nurse within the team.

Specifically these will include:

  • Ordering and putting away stationary and stores
  • Ordering medication and ensuring safe storage.
  • Updating of notice boards.
  • Keeping electronic records up to date
  • Typing basic reports and minutes, and filing agreed documents
  • Dealing with telephone calls into the service from patients/careers and other health care professionals
  • Contacting GP and Consultants regarding a patients treatment
  • Arranging appointments for the patients regarding their care
  • Taking telephone referrals
  • Participate in special events and campaigns to promote the service
  • Photocopying documents and consultations as per Trust guidelines.
  • Making up new patient packs and service information packs.
  • Complete the administration tasks to transfer and/or discharge patients in and out of the service.
  • Give advice and support to patients and carers, within duties appropriate to grade and level of competence.
  • Carry outin an emergencyand after training, simple first aid. Recording of this appropriately in patient's notes and reporting to the relevant registered practitioner at the earliest opportunity.
  • Communicate closely with other colleagues, reporting on patient's condition as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing administrative and statistical information, ensuring legal and local requirements are met.
