In the Commercial department the successful student will join a large team working on real business projects, carrying out a variety of quantity surveying tasks.


There is an opportunity to develop your commercial skills whilst gaining real world experience working alongside quantity surveyors in supporting the commercial function by delivering projects within the category plan ensuring optimum value for money for UU.


You will engage with operational and senior stakeholders; support the alignment of business strategy and policy to deliver category plans.

You will ensure contractual compliance and proactively manage contractor performance throughout the contract period.


You will benefit from the shared knowledge within the Commercial Team and expertise of working with colleagues across the wider Capital Delivery Team including Engineers, Project Managers and Project Management Office (PMO) Professionals, whilst also developing your own specialist skills and providing a valuable contribution to the team.


We will help you gain an understanding of the projects being undertaken by United Utilities and the methods used to deliver them.

Specific tasks may be assigned during this time. You will be accountable for delivering these with the support of experienced quantity surveyors and your line manager.

During your 12 month Internship you may also be given the opportunity to visit some of our sites.

You'll see how we carefully produce clean safe drinking water and how we treat wastewater in order to release it safely back in to the environment.


You will also get the opportunity to mix with our current graduates who can share experiences, tips and guidance with you for the next steps in your career.

We're looking for undergraduate quantity surveyors in their penultimate year of studying BSc Quantity Surveying degree or equivalent


And to:

  • Be working towards at least a 2:1 in a BSc Quantity Surveying degree or equivalent.

You'll also need:


  • Have researched and have knowledge of United Utilities' construction activities.
  • Have varied technical knowledge, not only through academic experience, but also through social and professional experience.
  • Have Knowledge of key quantity surveying processes, tools and methodologies used across the whole project lifecycle
  • Have good computer skills particularly in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel.
  • Be motivated and enthusiastic, an excellent team player, possessing ambition and drive.
  • Possess good written and interpersonal skills and have the ability to communicate and influence across all levels.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Be able to be comfortable working flexibly across a range of tasks and activities to deadlines as well as being able to prioritise your time.

Your mentor and manager will work with you as you progress through your placement and support you as you work towards your personal development goals.
