Post Title Head of Department of Education and Continuing Professional Learning
SBU/Department: Hertfordshire Law and Education
FTE: 1 FTE working 37 hours per week (full-time)
Duration of Contract: Fixed Term Contract for 4 years
Salary: AM1 £64,546 to £71,305 per annum
Annual Leave: 35 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year
Location: de Havilland Campus, Hatfield
Main duties and responsibilities- The Head of Department role is one of strategic leadership, ensuring the highest standards of teaching, learning, enterprise and scholarship in the disciplines, and the post holder leads on innovation as related to the University strategies. The post holder is expected to devise and undertake actions that develop and enhance the work of the department, including negotiating and meeting targets for recruitment, resource use and income generation.- The Head of Department of Education and Continuing Professional Learning will uphold the professional ethos of the School and University and share in the corporate responsibility for the academic well-being of students from diverse backgrounds within the school; establish and maintain constructive working relationships with colleagues and cooperate with them on the development and continuous improvement of the work of the University.
Skills and experience required

  • The post holder will have proven expertise in academic studies in education, and a demonstrable track record of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, with the ability to use appropriate teaching, learning and assessment methods. They will have demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the strategic developments in the Higher Education sector and of the University.
  • The post holder will have excellent communication skills and the ability to form good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The post holder will have a proven track record of programme leadership and line management. They will be committed to the ongoing development of teaching and learning skills (in particular the growing use of technology in relation to blended learning activities) and have enthusiastic approach towards their work and the work of the School.
  • Ideally, the post holder will have experience of strategic business planning and financial monitoring, and an established or emerging research profile in an area of the academic study of Education.
    Qualifications required
  • Minimum of an Masters (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant field. Membership of Advance HE or completion of further management or business related courses would be an advantage
