I have an opportunity for a
Head of Data Protection to join my client, a public sector organisation who are tasked with running a public inquiry.

This role is a contract basis for 23 months.

The Offices and Public Hearings Venue are based in central Edinburgh.

There is a hybrid approach to the role with the possibility of working remotely up to two days per week.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Be responsible for a small data protection team while performing the duties of a data protection officer whilst providing training and monitoring of the quality of work by the data protection team
  • Review relevant policies, procedures, and guidance, including conducting data protection impact assessments where necessary, to ensure that they are compliant with relevant data protection legislation and advise on improvements when required
  • Investigate any data breaches/incidents (suspected or otherwise) and provide professional advice to the Data Controller and the Chair of the Inquiry as to the severity and the Inquiry's legal obligations in respect of the incident
  • Act as the main point of contact for outsourced IT security teams, ensuring that they are always working to identify and safeguard the Inquiry from all known security weaknesses and threats whilst advising the Head of Records, Operations, Finance and Business Services where there are potential contractual breaches
  • Be able to work at a trauma skilled level, exhibiting an understanding of the complex factors involved in engagement with Inquiry witnesses and the impact of trauma.

Skills and experience required:


  • A strong background in risk management, including data and information security risk management
  • Experience of leading teams, particularly the ability to motivate and train key members of staff
  • A commitment to continuous improvement and the ability to remain up to date with new legislation and IT security methods
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organisational and planning skills
