South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust is looking to appoint a Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon for a period of one year initially.


We are looking for expertise in managing our increasing workload of acute soft tissue knee injuries and periprosthetic knee trauma.


The post is based at Warwick Hospital which is a busy District General Hospital providing Trauma & Orthopaedic services to the population of South Warwickshire.

The department consists of 12 substantive Consultant Orthopaedic surgeons and one Associate specialist.

The senior team are supported by 7 Specialty Doctors, 4 Specialist Registrars, doctors in training and 3 Extended Scope Practitioners.


The role includes participating in an on-call trauma rota, regular elective operating lists, orthopaedic & fracture clinics as well as providing undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.

To support the delivery of the Adult inpatient Orthopaedic service at Warwick Hospital.

To manage both Adult & Paediatric Orthopaedic trauma during the on-call week.

This is supported by the Paediatric Consultants and the dedicated Children & Young Persons ward staff (MacGregor ward) at Warwick hospital, and the regional tertiary referral centre for Paediatric Orthopaedics at University Hospital of Coventry & Warwick (UHCW).

There is no provision for anaesthetising children < 2 years at the hospital. Transfer to UHCW is arranged for these patients. These services are available 7-days a week and are also supported by an on-call duty manager for the hospital.

Mentoring and clinical support advice are available at the weekend from the Clinical Director in Orthopaedics and the other sub-speciality Consultants.

To support the management of complex knee trauma, primary and revision knee arthroplasty surgery and soft tissue knee surgery.


The post holder will be expected to provide daytime cover for the ward/unit and the basic working week is flexible with core hours from 8.00 a.m.

to 6.00 p.m. Monday to Friday, totalling 40 hours.

The on-call trauma week is undertaken 1 week in 8.
