  • To share in the provision of a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cardiology service including; supervision of inpatients on CCU and stepdown ward, with ward rounds as in Job Plan.
  • Contribution to the permanent pacing service, including implantation of new pacemaker systems and loop recorders, elective generator replacements and medical supervision of the technicianled device followup clinics.
  • Assessment of inpatients referred by other medical and surgical teams, including Medical Admissions Unit, Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department.
  • Clinical supervision of cardiac physiology staff and sharing overriding consultant responsibility for quality of reporting of noninvasive cardiac tests.
  • Provide consultant reporting of tests to other medical and surgical teams.
  • Liaison with anaesthetic and surgical colleagues for preoperative cardiac assessments, on request.
  • Develop subspecialty interest, as agreed with Cardiology Colleagues and Clinical Director.
  • Provision of outpatient clinics, including Rapid Access Chest Pain and Heart Failure clinics, as agreed in Job Plan, with appropriate investigation, followup and onward referral.
  • Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.

  • Please note the Job Description for this role is pending Royal College Approval*This new 10 PA post Consultant Cardiologist will work alongside our Consultant Cardiologist and will join our team of Consultant Physicians of other General Medicine Services.
The post holder will be a key member of the Cardiology Department at St Mary's Hospital, Isle of Wight.

There will also be opportunity for the post holder to work at Portsmouth Hospital Trust if the individual wishes to do so.

The post holder will be responsible for providing outpatient and inpatient Cardiology services and if appropriately qualified/accredited in general medicine, to include a regular 1 in 11 commitments to the medical on-call rota.

The post will be based at St. Mary's Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight.

The Cardiology Service


Cardiology inpatient care at St Mary's revolves around the Coronary Care Unit and attached Stepdown ward, which are adjacent to the Cardiology Department.

Facilities are six acute beds, including a fully equipped side room and GE Medical central monitoring facilities. There is a dedicated pacing theatre/procedures room, with a Siemens C-arm image intensifier. The Stepdown ward has 12 beds, four of which are individual side rooms.


St Mary's offers a full range of non-invasive investigations on-site including transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, ambulatory ECG and BP monitoring, Cardiomemo and implantable loop recorders.

Diagnostic coronary angiography is undertaken at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.

A primary angioplasty service is also provided in Portsmouth for Isle of Wight patients, who are usually transferred directly by helicopter from point of presentation to the catheter laboratory during flying hours.
