The role:

To underwrite business in accordance with the business plan and within delegated underwriting authority with the purpose of underwriting a profitable account on behalf of Aspen in the UK and Aspen Values demonstrated in the delivery and performance


Key accountabilities:


  • Contribute to the achievement of the UKP&C business plan
  • Develop and implement new business opportunities in line with business plan
  • Review, negotiate, accept or decline risks on behalf of the company
  • Develop and modify Policy Wordings, Clauses and Exclusions as circumstances require
  • To be involved in the purchase of facultative reinsurance, where required
  • Ensure all business is thoroughly evaluated and that risks written adhere to the company's underwriting guidelines and individual authority limits
  • To effectively and accurately use Aspen's systems for data input, interrogation of data, report generation etc.
  • To effectively and accurately use rating models to assess risk and price insurance contracts
  • Prepare/contribute (where necessary) to monthly, quarterly and ad hoc management information
  • Develop relationships with brokers and clients, including overseas visits and travel where necessary, and providing an efficient service to them
  • Support market associations and trade bodies
  • Undertake mentoring and development of less experienced members of the team and support colleagues and contribute to the delivery and achievement of the teams overall vision and objectives
  • Where applicable ensure company, market and client related documentation is issued (internally and externally) accurately and on time

  • Participate and undertake applicable professional, technical and career development training (delivered internally and externally) to include attainment of associated qualifications where required
  • Comply with external and internal regulatory and statutory policies, procedures and regulations
  • Liaise with key business groups to establish, support and maintain solid business relationships and organisational effectiveness

Skills & experience:


Knowledge And Experience

  • Significant knowledge of relevant market conditions for specific class
  • Good understanding of class specific underwriting
  • Strong knowledge of underwriting process and procedures
  • Good working knowledge of relevant underwriting systems
  • Strong knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements (specific reference to PRA, FCA and Lloyds regulations)
  • Specific professional qualification (CII) (preferable)
  • Substantial experience gained within the insurance industry and within a specialised/complex underwriting area
  • Strong/established customer/broker relationships
