Medical Secretary - Cardiology

Division of Medicine and Integrated Care

Russells Hall Hospital

Band 4

30-35 hours per week


An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medical Secretary to work within the Cardiology Department, on a 12 month fixed term basis to cover maternity leave.

Applicants should have GCSE at Grade C or above in English Language, as well as NHS administration experience. Applicants must have strong audio typing and transcription abilities.


Applicants should be proficient in using all aspects of Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook; will be highly organised and able to manage electronic diaries.

The applicant must be able to prioritise and work to deadlines and targets. Experience in Oasis/BigHand would be preferable but not essential.

  • Deal with new referral letters and action as appropriate
  • Ensure typing of clinical letters in a timely manner
  • Be the main point of contact for patients, colleagues and other healthcare professionals on behalf of your consultant/s
  • Assist in the planning and organisation of clinical activity (outpatient clinics, day case lists) by liaising with the appropriate members of staff within the Trust
  • Assist in the collation of information for reports, for example medical reports, risk and complaint management etc.
  • Planning and organising a number of conflicting tasks and priorities at the same time still meeting challenging deadlines.
  • Prioritise workload independently, identifying urgency, highlighting problems and taking appropriate action to prevent or solve problems without supervision.
  • Maintenance of medical records
  • Maintenance of individual filing systems on behalf of the consultant and their team
  • Ensure adequate tracking of medical records both in and out of department
