For 2023, our priorities are:

  • Optimise public R&D investment to support areas of relative UK strength and increase the level of private R&D to make our economy the most innovative in the world.
  • Promote a diverse research and innovation system that connects discovery to new companies, growth and jobs including by delivering worldclass physical and digital infrastructure (such as gigabit broadband), making the UK the best place to start and grow a technology business and developing and attracting top talent.
  • Put our public services including the NHS and schools at the forefront of innovation, championing new ways of working and the development of inhouse STEM capability to improve outcomes for people.
  • Strengthen international collaboration on science and technology in line with the Integrated Review, and ensure our researchers are able to continue to work with leading scientists in Europe and around the world.
  • Deliver key legislative and regulatory reforms to drive competition and promote innovation, including the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumer Bill and our proinnovation approach to regulating AI.
  • Pass the remaining stages of the reformed Online Safety Bill to keep British people, especially children, safe online.

Job description:


  • We are actively seeking a highly motivated HEO
  • Programme Support Officer (Apprentice) to join our European Programmes team in delivering key initiatives such as Horizon Guarantee, COST, and EURAXESS. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in implementing effective governance structures, ensuring seamless reporting processes, and managing the Risk, Assumptions, Issues, and Dependencies (RAID) across multiple projects. Your contribution will be instrumental in managing delivery partners as well as maintaining the success and strategic alignment of these programmes.
  • This is a highprofile and fastpaced area, of close interest to DSIT Ministers, No.10, Foreign Office and HM Treasury. It has been of significant media interest in recent months. The post holder will be working in a fascinating and challenging delivery area which requires considerable engagement with partners across Whitehall, the R&D industry, and partner bodies.
  • Our team leads on the UK's association to Horizon Europe, a sevenyear European Research & Innovation (R&I) programme. It will provide a platform through which our scientists and innovators can tackle significant and shared challenges in society, ranging from climate change to global health.
  • Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship:
  • As part of this role, we will be supporting you to undertake a Level 4 Project Manager apprenticeship. It will explore different organisational structures, responsibilities and stakeholders and demonstrates the importance of project management planning and communication plans.
This apprenticeship will cover the core skills in the project planning process from project definition to handover, as well as learning about budget management, cost control and how to support management objectives
