The Role

We are currently recruiting for a Technical Specialist to work in the Consumer Investments Market Analysis & Policy Department.

The Technical Specialist role supports the Consumer Investment Directorate's work across 6 industry sectors:


  • Financial Advisers
  • Investment Platforms
  • SIPP Operators
  • Wealth managers & stockbrokers
  • Investmentbased Crowdfunders
  • Peer to Peer Lending


These sector areas include over 6,000 firms which are involved in the provision and distribution of retail investment products, long-term savings products, and pension and retirement income products.

The Department's core purpose is shaping policy, carrying out sector risk assessments, horizon scanning and supporting effective sector supervision.

As a Technical Specialist in the Department a key part of your work will be to lead market analysis to identify changing trends and emerging issues that could cause harm to consumers and markets and use these to inform risk assessment, supervisory decision making and future strategy.

What does this job involve?


The Technical Specialist is a senior position within the Department and acts as a technical adviser on complex issues within the Consumer Investment directorate and as part of cross-FCA initiatives (where there are interdependencies across sectors and regulatory functions).

We are looking for a person that offers significant industry experience and knowledge; in-depth technical knowledge of the products, services and business models involved in the distribution of investment products to retail clients; has a solid understanding of regulatory policies; and can, confidently represent the FCA among a diverse group of external stakeholders.


We believe in data-led, proactive regulation and are keen to hear from people who can think creatively about how to use data to identify potential drivers of harm, target the highest risk firms and deliver consumer-focused outcomes.

The role holder will provide leadership and guidance in the work of the Consumer Investment directorate by

  • Analysing market developments (economic, political, regulatory, innovation etc) to assess the impact on firms and consumers, and recommend future regulatory strategy and work with relevant stakeholders to deliver change
  • Contributing to the development of regulatory policy to implement Consumer Investments Strategy and assessing the impact of strategies and interventions
  • Designing and delivering projects to assess firm conduct and/or consumer outcomes
- demonstrating proactivity and independence of thought, and actively seeking out opportunities to deliver our priorities

  • Leading and delivering highprofile and technically complex projects
The role holder will support the Consumer Investments directorate and its work by

  • Identifying and developing strong networks with key internal and external stakeholders and use that to positively influence strategic change
  • Confidently communicating through verbal and written content and tone of internal and external communications
  • Representing the FCA at industry and speaking events and/or drafting speeches for senior leaders
  • Providing constructive feedback to colleagues and stakeholders
