Healthcare ScientistAssistant
To support Biomedical Scientists in providing a professional Laboratory service to users and clients.
The post holder will work as an integral member of the Laboratory team and be responsible for a wide range of tasks to support/assist all laboratory disciplines provide a high-quality laboratory service.
Location - Belfast
Hours of Work Hours per week (Monday to Friday) Post holder will be required to participate in a 24/7 service which may include extended working over days, nights, weekends, and public holidays
Salary:
- £10.40
What the role entails:
- To support all three laboratory disciplines by providing samples, prepared and ready for analysis supplied according to clinical need.
- Assist in the routine operation and development of the laboratory specimen reception according to changing needs
- Prioritise and manage own work Following laboratory Standard Operating Procedures/Policies carry out the following tasks:
- Receive, sort, and prioritise all samples arriving at Specimen Reception for processing. This includes unpacking, checking, labelling, delivering, preparing, and storing samples some of which may be high risk or leaking.
- Carefully prepare samples for analysis. This may involve centrifuging and separating samples, pipetting serum, measuring, and recording volumes and determining sample PH to ensure sample suitability for analysis.
- Accurately enter and check patient request information onto laboratory computer system. Book in electronically ordered laboratory tests.
- Deal with problem samples and refer to team leader/senior Laboratory staff if necessary, rejecting unsuitable specimens and entering the information onto the laboratory computer system in accordance with protocol.
Essential Criteria:
OR
Have 2 year's relevant laboratory experience working in a hospital laboratory.
AND
Hold the IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I or, if appropriate, be willing to achieve this within 18 months of employment by completing the Institute of Biomedical Science Support Staff Training Portfolio, conferring eligibility to register with the IBMS as a Registered Science Technician upon gaining appropriate professional experience
