Description

An opportunity has arisen for a full time Speech & Language Therapist, to work with clients with a mental health diagnosis who are inpatients on Sheffield Health and Social Care wards and within the SHSC Community Learning Disability Team.

You will sit within the Community Learning Disability Teams and will have the benefit of being part of a highly experiences Speech & Language Therapy team including specialist posts for Dysphagia/ Challenging Behaviour / Mental Health and Autism.

The team operates a robust clinical supervision policy and regular clinical meetings to ensure all therapists have an opportunity to share their practices and be supported.

Currently the post is split into 2 roles

18.75 permanent hours
- dysphagia management in mental health including older adult dementia wards

18.75 hours 12 month fixed term

  • Community Learning Disability Team, it's expected this part of the role will be made permanent following service reconfiguration confirmation within the 12 month period.


You will have at least 2 year of post graduate experience and be confident in assessment and formulating person-centred management plans for dysphagia and communication needs.


You will delivery dysphagia training to staff teams and will be responsible for reviewing and updating training content, with support.

You will participate in MDT meetings and discussions.

You may also be involved in best interest decisions making in relation to the dysphagia needs of your clients.

You will evaluate the need for communication input on SHSC wards and trial communication approaches where agreed.

You will carry out person centred communication assessment for adults with learning disabilities Implement communication strategies and training.

Principal Duties


They will provide mentoring / clinical supervision to more junior Speech and Language Therapists and Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, be involved in induction of new staff and provide clinical training and supervision for Speech and Language Therapy students on practice placement in the SHSC Trust.

They will provide advice/training to other professionals, patients, carers and families regarding the management and care of patients with communication and/or feeding and swallowing difficulties
