Hours:16 hours per week preferably - Sunday 8am to 12pm, Monday 8am to 12pm and Tuesday 8am to 4.00pm (1 hour for lunch) with the potential for additional hours

Main purpose of job


Working for a renowned equine charity in the South West and a member of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) and the Human Equine Interaction Register (HEIR), this role is to assist in the daily tasks of the equine rescue and well-being charity.


Day to day care of a variety of equines and other animals, ensuring their welfare needs are met to a high standard.

This includes stable duties, field management and upkeep, working with horses and administration of medication. To include all aspects of horse care, general yard work and assisting with vet and farrier visits. To help fundraise for the charity to increase income through yard activities e.g., tack sales.


Essential qualifications, skills, and experience

  • Experience of handling a variety of different types of horses and ponies.
  • Some knowledge of basic veterinary procedures, common ailments and injuries.
  • Good standard of stable hygiene.
  • Experience of working with other animals both farm and domestic.
  • Valid manual driving licence and use of a car as site is remote with no public transport.
  • Able to work flexibly as part of a small multiagency team.
  • Good communication skills, literacy and numeracy.

Desirable or Additional experience

  • Experience of working with equines using a variety of practical training and horsemanship techniques.
  • Experience with young people between the ages of 418 and adults with a range of disabilities, special educational needs and mental ill health or a willingness to learn.
  • Working knowledge of horse behaviour and/or previous experience of handling youngsters, wild, unbroken horses and ponies and those with behaviour issues.
  • Experience of using land maintenance equipment (i.e., chain harrow and poo picker)
  • Experience of using tractors, quad bikes, trailers.

The person

Other duties and responsibilities

  • Work as directed by the management and trustees.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate paper and electronic records to include admission, rehoming, behaviour, training, financial and veterinary information.
  • Assist the Youth Service and Well-Being team by caring for their horses/ponies before and after sessions as well as their daytoday care.
  • To be responsible for personal Health and Safety, the safety and welfare of visitors and volunteers plus taking necessary/appropriate action to ensure this, including Risk Assessments and other paperwork.
  • To assist with charity fund raising, publicity and educational events and activities. Including open days, offsite fairs, and events.
  • Work to charity protocols to maintain high standards of presentation throughout the centre.
  • Ensure the highest standards of customer care are always delivered by providing a professional and friendly service.
  • Work within the guidelines of The Hugs Foundation values, using them as a framework to communicate with the rest of the team.
  • This description is not exhaustive, and this role maybe required to undertake other reasonable tasks as directed by the Yard Manager.

Standard hours are 16 hours per week preferably - Sunday 8am to 12pm, Monday 8am to 12pm and Tuesday 8am to 4.00pm (1 hour for lunch) and with the potential for additional hours.

Due to the nature of the work of The Hugs Foundation it may be necessary to exceed these hours when the workload demands, for example, welfare emergencies.

In the interest of Health & Safety and to perform a physically active job, team members are required to maintain a suitable level of fitness to enable them to perform their job effectively.

*Please note this role is fixed term for 1 year. We are hoping this will be extended, but it will depend on funding.
