This MHST Whole School Approach Practitioner's role will work with schools and colleges as part of a Mental Health Support Team (MHST).

The post holder will be responsible for working directly with schools to coproduce, deliver and evaluate manualised CBT whole school interventions to CYP.

These interventions include developing school networks, staff training in mental health, supporting EMHPS to deliver therapy groups, presenting in school assemblies etc.

They will be expected to support EMHPS in delivering high-quality CBT, so knowledge and experience delivering this therapeutic approach is desirable.


The post holder will work with and support other senior colleagues to develop the MHSTs and facilitate wider service transformation within the local child mental health system - this will be done in conjunction with and local service leads and managers.


Working under the direction of the Clinical & Strategic Lead, the post-holder will be responsible for liaising directly with schools, developing and co-producing materials for delivery/presentation in schools, and supporting the development and embedding of the MHSTs in schools.

The NHS team uses a blend of face-to-face interventions along with online/digital support as part of what is offered (e.g. support via video and telephone calls). The post holder will be expected to travel throughout their employment. This travel will be to offer support into a variety of education settings.


WSA practitioners will be agilely based with a nominal base of Stapleford House, Chelmsford as travel between multiple education settings is essential to the role, access to a car is desirable.


The post holder will achieve this by being responsible for co-designing, delivering and evaluating whole school approach interventions within Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) based in schools and colleges, whilst receiving clinical supervision.


Starting with NELFT:

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust.

All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment.

As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend several drop-in sessions focussing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes.

The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Key Responsibilities:


  • The post holder will work as part of the Essex MHSTs delivering, under supervision, high-quality, brief outcome focused CBT evidence-based interventions for children and young people experiencing in schools and colleges.
  • The post holder will be responsible for delivering whole school clinical interventions within the MHST and will receive clinical supervision from a more senior psychological practitioner.
  • To routinely measure clinical outcomes.
  • Promoting the mental and emotional health of children, young people and families in the community through evidenced based clinical interventions.
  • Providing a direct service to children and young people and their families, in an accessible and less stigmatizing environment, based on the best available research evidence, within clinical governance
  • To improve the knowledge and understanding of emotional and mental wellbeing services among school staff where appropriate
  • To prevent more serious mental health problems in children and young people by early identification of the development of mental health problems in children and young people
