Job summary:


Context:

The post holder will operate within Innovate UK and will be part of the Innovate UK Aerospace Team.

Aerospace team members work to identify, support and accelerate high growth-potential innovation in the UK, based on cutting-edge research, technology and approaches.

The team works with innovators across a broad range of technology and end-use sectors.


As well as engaging directly with innovators, the team works closely with innovation stakeholders in the public and private sectors including Government departments (DBT and DSIT in particular), Public Sector Research Establishments (PSREs), and other parts of UK Research & Innovation (UKRI).

Job Purpose:


As an Innovation Lead, the post holder will be responsible for Innovate UK activity in relation to aerospace, aviation and mobility and for ensuring appropriate innovation opportunities can be developed and exploited by UK business to generate growth in response to industrial challenges and commercial opportunities.


The challenges involved include moving to Net Zero by 2050 and Zero Carbon within aerospace and aviation, present many opportunities.

Harnessing innovation opportunities alongside the appropriate infrastructure can make a direct and positive impact on economic growth, the environment and quality of life, via improved processes and products.

This role will include shared responsibilities to support the wider mobility team on cross-cutting technologies.


Job description:


Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:


  • Contribute to the development and promotion of the Innovate UK strategy in aerospace, aviation and mobility, based on a good understanding of relevant industries and technologies and wider innovation infrastructure.
  • Lead on the implementation of the strategy to enable industry to develop and commercialise new products, processes, business models and services.
  • Build strong relationships with relevant bodies and networks such as businesses, trade associations, Catapults, government departments and agencies, private investors, regulatory bodies and research organisations.
  • Act as the technical/technology focus for all aspects of the aviation technology aspects of the programme
  • Evaluate the viability, likelihood, risks and timescales for proposed new technologies and capabilities.
  • Identify gaps in the technical roadmaps for aviation, aerospace and mobility and encourage nontraditional technology solutions including those from other industries.
  • Ensure that UK activity is set in an international context and recognises regional strengths across the UK.
  • Work with Innovate UK and UKRI colleagues and networks to ensure that decisions made in this area make sense in the context of the wider organisation, strategically and operationally.
  • Represent Innovate UK and UKRI at events (such as conferences, meetings, workshops) and in the media as appropriate.
  • Support impact analysis of relevant aviation, aerospace and mobility programmes and projects.

This position requires a person with commercial awareness who can manage competing priorities and a complex stakeholder environment.

The role holder will need to make sense of multiple data sources, to establish underlying patterns and articulate a clear and compelling vision of what needs to be done.

A good team player, willing to share knowledge on aerospace and aviation with others and to learn from them. Able to self-start when needed.


Qualifications:

Essential

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline or relevant equivalent experience

Experience:

Essential

  • Uptodate and broadbased knowledge of innovation in aerospace and aviation.
  • Demonstrable technical capability in at least 2 of the following: aerospace vehicles, aerostructures, propulsion, on platform systems, airspace management.
  • Experience of operating at aerospace system level showing an ability to understand and integrate a wide range of technologies
  • Demonstrate the ability to architect enterprise/business systems covering multiple disciplines and technical areas
  • Appreciation of the wider industrial landscape in the UK.
  • Knowledge and experience of innovation in a commercial environment.
