Description

To address the risk of explosion across the region by providing support to the Hazardous Area Electrical Engineers and auditing site inspections carried out by inspection framework suppliers to BS EN /17.


This will include identifying any areas of non-conformance and ensuring that it is corrected thereby ensuring that UU meets its statutory obligations in respect of the Health & Safety at Work Act and Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations (DSEAR).


Job Accountabilities:


  • Technical Authority for the inspection and maintenance of equipment in hazardous areas
  • Responsible for providing technical support to the Hazardous Area Electrical Engineers carrying out inspections and maintenance on equipment in hazardous areas and supervising less experienced engineers where required.
  • Responsible for the auditing of inspections carried out on equipment in hazardous areas by the 3rd party inspection framework suppliers to BS EN /1
  • Create/review reports following inspection audit and create resulting action plans, taking ownership of defects through to resolution.
  • Communicate risks, issues and noncompliance regarding DSEAR and associated equipment to relevant stakeholders informing them of risk. Where necessary escalate issues and seek resolution.
  • Carry out technical assurance of documentation including asset certification and intrinsically safe circuit design documentation
  • Help govern the EX equipment inspection and maintenance register helping to ensure that it is accurate.
  • Working with the DSEAR Compliance Coordinator to ensure dependencies are understood and can be executed thereby facilitating the required inspections and maintenance.
  • Building collaborative relations with framework contractors, supervising where required.
  • Responsible for building strong working relationships with stakeholders across the company to promote a collaborative approach ensuring DSEAR compliance is achieved.
  • Help guide inspection frequency updates to reflect inspections outcomes, thereby helping to drive continuous improvement and compliance.
  • Be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Inspection and Maintenance of equipment in hazardous areas providing input where required into asset standards and procedures.
  • To promote health, safety and wellbeing.

Knowledge and Skills:


  • Qualified to a minimum of either; City and Guilds, ONC or Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Engineering with hands on engineering experience gained in an operational environment. Experience working with Instrumentation an advantage.
  • Hold CompEx 0104 and 0506 certification
  • Proven experience (5+years) of carrying out installation and inspection of EX equipment in hazardous areas, including time in a supervisory role.
  • Strong engineering competence including clear understanding of the DSEAR regulations and engineering standards (BS EN /17/19) with excellent knowledge of electrical equipment for us in potentially explosive atmospheres.
  • Ability to understand, utilize and discuss relevant technical and process safety documentation such as Electrical and Instrumentation loop drawings, Descriptive System Documents (DSD's), Functional Design Specifications (FDS) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID's).
  • Good planning and organizational skills
  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills (verbal and written) to ensure highly technical information can be communicated clearly to all levels within the company.
  • Welldeveloped analytical skills and a proven track record in identifying issues and driving through solutions to a wide range of technical issues.
  • Ability to be resilient and tenacious. Be personally driven to overcome operational obstacles
  • Ability to build collaborative relations with operational staff, other departments and key stakeholders such as framework contractors
