We invite you to bring your experience as a lead highways design engineer into play as you engage in a number of significant highway design projects, leading a team of dedicated design engineers, delivering design solutions, working on a range of multi-disciplinary projects.


To succeed in this role, you must have gained full membership of an appropriate professional institution with a degree in Civil Engineering and you must have proven experience leading and delivering design solutions for preliminary and detailed design stages of highway projects.

As our new Associate you will be part of our expanding Highways team, working for a range of clients including national government agencies, local authorities, developers and contractors.

Your key tasks and responsibilities will be:

  • Demonstrate technical leadership and provide both expertise and advice to clients and stakeholders
  • Work closely with other highway and environmental design disciplines in the delivery of projects
  • Delivery of projects from inception to completion ensuring scope, contracts, budgets and QA procedures are all in place and maintained through the project lifecycle
  • Engage with internal and external design teams and lead and guide design engineers and technicians
  • Look to innovate and develop design systems alongside Ramboll's Digital Design Team
  • Provide guidance, instruct, motivate, and manage assigned staff on the project
  • Providing technical guidance and support to our colleagues and assist in mentoring and development
  • Demonstrate ability in financial management of projects including fee forecasting, fee preparation, and resource allocation
  • Supporting bid teams to prepare proposals for multidisciplinary tenders

For this role, we believe your starting point is:


  • BEng/MEng (Hons) Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer, MICE or equivalent with strong post qualification experience
  • Detailed knowledge of Highways Design, DMRB and MCHW on large road schemes
  • Detailed knowledge of BIM procedures and Extranet systems such as Bentley ProjectWise
  • Experienced in project delivery including authoring and reviewing reports, drawings and specifications
  • Detailed knowledge of health and safety legislation, including CDM Regulations
  • Experience working on design & build projects and have worked with central government, local authorities or contractors as clients
  • Ability to work well under pressure and proven ability to deliver to deadlines

Will have a proven record as a competent Designer and Manager on a number of projects, with a confident and professional manner.

Self-motivated and able to work well on your own initiative. Excellent communicator who is highly organized and able to prioritize. Ability to develop strong professional relationships with clients and partners.
