Job Summary:
The Attendance Officer at this secondary school in South London plays a vital role in supporting the school's mission to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for students with a history of Social, Emotional & Mental health & challenging behaviour.
The Attendance Officer will work closely with the school's leadership team, teaching staff, students, and their families to monitor and improve attendance, reducing instances of unauthorized absence and promoting regular school attendance.
Key Responsibilities:
Attendance Monitoring:
- Maintain accurate attendance records using the school's electronic attendance system.
- Identify and record instances of unauthorized absence promptly.
- Monitor daily attendance, identify trends, and report patterns of absence to the appropriate school authorities.
Early Intervention:
- Develop strategies for early intervention to address attendance issues.
- Contact parents/guardians and students to discuss attendance concerns and facilitate solutions.
- Collaborate with external agencies or professionals when necessary to support students with attendance challenges.
Attendance Improvement Plans:
- Create and implement individualise attendance improvement plans for students with persistent attendance problems.
- Monitor the progress of attendance improvement plans and make necessary adjustments as needed.
Data Analysis and Reporting:
- Analyze attendance data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Generate regular attendance reports for school leadership and local authorities.
- Provide input into the school's annual report on attendance.
Home Visits:
- Conduct home visits when required to understand the reasons behind a student's absence and provide support.
- Build positive relationships with parents/guardians to encourage better attendance.
Collaboration:
- Collaborate with teaching staff, pastoral care teams, and external agencies to address attendance issues.
- Attend meetings, such as Child Protection Conferences or Case Review Meetings, as needed.
Attendance Policies:
- Ensure that the school's attendance policies and procedures are consistently implemented and communicated to all stakeholders.
Training and Awareness:
- Provide training and awareness programs for staff, students, and parents on the importance of regular attendance.
- Stay uptodate with best practices and legal requirements related to attendance.
Requirements:
- Previous experience in a similar role, preferably in an educational or youth services setting.
- Full Driving license
- Enhanced Child DBS or willingness to pay for one
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Empathy and the ability to build rapport with students and their families.
- Effective problemsolving and conflictresolution skills.
- Excellent organizational and recordkeeping abilities.
- Proficiency in using computer software and attendance management systems.
