HMRC is the UK's tax, payments and customs authority, and we have a vital purpose: we collect the money that pays for public services and help families and individuals with targeted financial support.

Large Business (LB) is responsible for over 2,000 of the largest businesses that pay a significant proportion of the total business taxes and duties that HMRC collects.

Job description:

  • This Grade 7 role sits within the Risk Identification, Innovation & Infrastructure function in Large Business National Compliance (LBNC). LBNC is an exciting and ambitious central team, whose aim is to identify and proactively manage the emerging and strategic tax compliance risks LB faces in a changing landscape for both downstream and upstream. LBNC leads the identification and strategic management of significant LB and wider Customer Compliance Group (CCG) compliance risks and supports crosscutting CCG initiatives. Part of this strategy is to identify, understand and exploit opportunities in relation to Stamp Taxes (in particular, Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT).
    Person specification:
    Responsibilities:
  • Be responsible for some of HMRC's most complex SDLT compliance cases, including fact finding/investigation work, corresponding with customers, attending meetings and calls with customers and agents, collaborating closely with HMRC stakeholders, drafting formal submissions and technical correspondence, and preparing for and attending Tribunal hearings.
  • Conduct targeted SDLT risk assessments for LB customers.
  • Provide training on SDLT issues and new measures to LB colleagues.
  • Assist the team with project and campaign work.
  • Build relationships with HMRC stakeholders.
  • Assist in promoting the profile of Stamp Taxes across LB.
  • As a tax professional you are expected to complete 5 days of CPD each year.

Essential Criteria:

  • Stamp Taxes knowledge is essential. For example, this knowledge could have been acquired through advisory work as an agent or legal representative, or in the course of employment with HMRC.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of tax compliance work (in SDLT or other regimes such as VAT or corporation tax) is desirable but not required. Training will be given if necessary.

Behaviours:

We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

  • Working Together
  • Making Effective Decisions
  • Managing a Quality Service

Benefits:

  • Learning and development tailored to your role
  • An environment with flexible working options
  • A culture encouraging inclusion and diversity
  • A Civil Service pension with an average employer contribution of 27%
